Half Model of a 12-Gun Brig.Polychromed mold model (starboard) of a tweemaster. The skin above the bark wood is closed, six painted gunpaints on one deck. This Violano Virtuoso was marketed from 1911 by an American firm, the Mills Novelty Company and represented a high point in the development of mechanical music machines. It stood in public places and could be delivered with or without a coin slot.Celestial globe. In the 17th century, it was customary to sell globes in pairs. A celestial globe shows the planets and constellations. Cartographers relied on mariners to provide them with records they made of the skies on their voyages. The constellations dominate the globe. The lid is decorated on top with a large basket holding various auspicious objects and emitting rays of light in support of a giant chun (spring) character, which is flanked on both sides by a five-clawed dragon frolicking amongst clouds. In the center of the chun character is a roundel enclosing the Daoist immortal Shoulao seated under a pine tree beside a reclining deer. In short, the complex design symbolizes a wish of wealth, long life, and eternal spring for the emperor.
