Inkstone with dragon and carp China 14th century This unusual inkstone is carved from a type of stoneware known as chengni, or filtered clay. Made from very fine silted clay that has undergone a labor-intensive process of filtering, kneading, molding, firing, and carving, chengni inkstones became popular during the Song dynasty (960-1279). The vigorous carving style of this piece, however, dates it to the fourteenth century. The inkstones decoration invokes the myth that a carp, should it succeed in swimming upstream through the Dragon Gate of the Yellow River, will become a dragon. A metaphor for success on the civil service exam, here, the gulf between carp and dragon is defined by the inkstone and inkwellwhose diligent use might well decide the difference between failure and success. Design for Monstrance, Graphite on cream paper, The foot consists of a pedestal showing the animals of the Evangelists, and a cherub over an inscription 'EVANGELUS.' A capital stands on the pedestal, beside the foot of which two angels sit, holding three nails and the Sudarium, respectively. The shaft consists of a balaster, around part of which is wound a vine garland. Two flying angels, on top, hold the cloud glory which with cherubim surrounds the circular frame of the receptacle, which shows a row of stars. God the father stands in the top center. Dance Blanket, c. 1840-1850, 53 x 62 x 7/8 in. (134.62 x 157.48 x 2.22 cm) (without backing), Wool, silk, beads; needlework, United States, 19th century, This rare blanket combines two important Native American decorative forms: beading and ribbonwork. The appliqué ribbon designs combine traditional Native work with American folk quilting. While the ribbonwork is unattributed, the beadwork was probably made by the Dakota. This superb example of Native American artistry was passed down through the prominent LaFramboise family of Minnesota. Family lore states that this blanket was once owned by Jane Dickson LaFramboise (born circa 1820), a woman of Anishinabe/Dakota descent whose father had good relations with the Dakota. The blanket was said to have been used at her wedding in 1845 to Joseph LaFramboise who established one of the first trading posts in Minnesota.
