Terracotta kylix (drinking cup) ca. 540-520 B.C. Attributed to the Group of the Phineus Painter Obverse and reverse, between eyes, nose; at handles, earsWhile certainly influenced by Attic models, Chalcidian eye-cups have a distinct elegance produced by their normally fine potting and and precise decoration. The small, concave foot that is often reserved rather than glazed also gives these works a light appearance. While noses do occur between eyes on Attic eye-cups, the inclusion of ears is a Chalcidian feature. The noses and ears evoke satyrs and associate the decoration, sparse though it is, with the world of Dionysos.. Terracotta kylix (drinking cup). Greek, Chalcidian. ca. 540-520 B.C.. Ambroise Bernard Album. Artist: Carleton E. Watkins (American, 1829-1916); Attributed to Carleton E. Watkins (American, 1829-1916). Dimensions: 43.5 x 37.5 cm (17 1/8 x 14 3/4 in.). Date: 1870s.This deluxe "Ambroise Bernard Sompayrac Album" contains 101 albumen silver prints (10½ x 13"), which seem to have been cut down from mammoth-plate (18 x 22") prints. There are a dozen cityscapes of San Francisco by Watkins as well as views of the great trees and hotels in Mariposa and Calaveras Groves, towns and cities of California from Oakland to Los Angeles, and landscapes in Nevada and Oregon. The central section includes forty-two views of Yosemite. Since none of the photographs appears in any other collection, it is uncertain if they are by Watkins or another artist. Who else but Watkins could have achieved this level of mastery remains a mystery. The collection was assembled by Charles Sompayrac, a wealthy San Francisco businessman from Natchitoches, Louisiana, and presented to his broth

Analogies are often made to artists or teachers testing pupils in similar ways. Mount Tiantai, home to the Tiantai sect of Buddhism, is also a sacred site for Daoist practice. In China as in Japan, mountains were long regarded as intermediary places between heaven and earth, where immortals and humans could meet. One of the "eccentrics" of Edo painting, Soga Shohaku often featured exaggerated, restless brushwork as well as outlandish subject matter.
