Potters in both Japan and China were quick to copy Western forms in order to make their export wares more easily saleable in European markets. While Japanese porcelains were imported into Europe in increasing numbers in the early eighteenth century, they nevertheless remained luxury objects and were prized in part due to the durability of porcelain, which was only beginning to be manufactured in Europe at this time.. In addition to their imaginative works designed by the German-born artistic director, Karl H. L. Müller, the firms mainstay was the production of heavy porcelain hotel dinnerware. This extensive service was made by Thomas Carll Smith, head of the Union Porcelain Works, as a gift to his daughter, Pastora Forest Smith Chace. The neoclassical decoration of the gilt bellflower and basket motif is complimented by turquoise enamel. Unlike the firms more eccentric and lavish designs created for their display at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876, the pottery favored a more restrained classical style for their dinner services. This service descended in the Chace family.. Covered Vegetable Dish 2576Vase. Hayakawa, Komejirô (act. c.1880-1912), craftsmanClose-up of an Apothecary jar, Venice, Veneto, ItalyIncense Burner China. Tea leaf jar with ladies at leisure 48052Ewer last quarter 16th century A collection of animals appears here, their motifs suggesting a relaxed, pastoral procession on the neck and a more energetic free-for-all on the body of the jug. It is difficult to assign symbolic meanings to groups of animals this varied, though the lion, for example, has a long history in Islamic and pre-Islamic art as both a royal and an astrological symbol. Quite as likely is the possibility that the Iznik potter was attracted to animal forms solely as decoration.. Ewer. last quarter 16th century. Stonepaste; painted and glazed. CeramicsJardinière 1876 Union Porcelain Works The Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition in 1876 was a critical catalyst for the development of the American Art Pottery movement. In celebration of the country's hundred-year history, the enormous fair--for which preparations began in 1871--was designed to demonstrate America's technological and artistic progress in the years since gaining its independence. Ceramics played a critical role at the fair, providing an anthology of world ceramics, the repercussions of which were felt for decades. American ceramics manufacturers saw the Centennial Exhibition as an opportunity to elevate the aesthetic and technical quality of their wares and to seize a greater part of the burgeoning ceramics market from foreign rivals. For the first time, the fair would provide a major international showcase for their products; it signaled an increasing emphasis on the artistic aspects of ceramic production. The Portland Vase is one of the finest surviving pieces Roman glass, and is named after the Duke of Portland who owned it from 1785 to 1945. It made of cameo glass a technique in which vessels and plaques, sometimes free-blown, sometimes cast, are created with two layers of glass. The outer layer (usually white) is carved away from the underlying dark layer (usually blue) to create decorative scenes and patterns.Apothecary jar (albarello). Culture: Italian, Naples.
