The silver had been hidden there centuries earlier, in the 1630s, by one Georg Hoffman, who feared looting during the Thirty Years War. Simon Pissinger, the silversmith who probably made this cup, was successful enough to buy a large house in Regensburg in 1599; his work (including a pair like this one) was acquired by the city council for their stock of gifts for visiting dignitaries.
