Dish Vienna (State Manufaktura)

Bowl 12th-13th century Many early Islamic ceramics survive in fragmentary condition. In the past losses were sometimes disguised using shards from similar objects or replaced with new ceramic pieces. In the case of this minai bowl, the fine saw marks visible in the radiograph around the edge of the large central fragment as well as the fluorescence of the overlying paint under ultraviolet illumination indicate that this area and several other small losses were filled using old fragments that were cut to shape and painted. As this century-old restoration has historic value and may be preserved, digital editing software has been used to reveal how much of the original bowl is extant.. Bowl 446281

Sacrifice of Noah ca. 1580-1610 After a woodcut by Bernard Salomon French Having exited the ark with his family and the animals he has rescued, Noah offers sacrifices to God, who promises never to send another flood (Genesis 8:20-22). As suggested by the compositional style and the palette of bold ochers and blues, the plate may have been the work of an Italian maiolica painter active in France. Table top depicting Aurora and the Chariot of Apollo 1822 Gioacchino Barberi After the popularity of mosaics in ancient times, the technique had a second great period in late eighteenth and early nineteenth century in Rome. Affluent tourists were the patrons of a new working technique that transformed antique prototypes in being meticulously assembled with much smaller glass tesserae, a celebrated craft today known as micromosaic. This unusually large example depicts Aurora, after the ceiling fresco by Guido Reni (1575-1642) in the Pallavicini-Rospigliosi Palace in Rome. The ambitious composition is flanked on either side by Dionysian trophies, with birds fluttering above kantharoi filled with flowers framed by scrolling acanthus vines. Red and blue bands form a border of intertwined yellow and blue ribbons above a grape vine on a black ground. Contemporaries listed Barberi as one of the leading artists of miniature micromosaics.. Pocket watch. The case of this watch is enamelled. The art of painting in enamel was perfected in the 17th century. A white ground was fired first. The next layer - consisting of depictions applied in tiny dots of colour - was then fired separately. Specialists in this complex technique were established in Blois and in Paris. The movement was made later especially for this case.

Jardinière with putti and floral scrolls, with a metal mount, anonymous, c. 1850 Jardinière of porcelain, painted on the glaze in email colors and gold. The outer wall is covered with blue with a large, richly decorated compartment with two putti on a cloud or flower branches. The pot is encased in an extensively gilded metal frame. The foot is in the form of two antique figures with a wreath of grape vines and kneeling on leaf vines, which carry the pot above their heads. . Walled dish, painted in flat with large flower branches that are largely bottom left to a bouquet. There are spreader flowers and two butterflies. The flowers, irises, magmolia branches and ugly fruits, especially with the flowers. The performance is surrounded by a lambrequin tire, filled with blue tendrils. In the edge a brocade motif with alternating a field with peonies and a stylized flower. A cracked ice motif on the outside and a simple floral pattern in the center.

The Drunken SiIenus: Design for the "Tazza Farnese" 1599-1600 Annibale Carracci Italian The debauched god Silenus of Greek mythology reclines in the center, already drunk and about to continue imbibing wine from the sack held by a horned satyr and a nude youth, while at either side putti climbing on the ornamental vines of the frame offer grapes to the group. This final, highly finished demonstration drawing is for a standing silver cup or salver (the "Tazza Farnese"), for Annibale's patron Cardinal Odoardo Farnese and is one of the only signed drawings by the artist. The "Tazza Farnese" is no longer extant. A silver plaque (Museo Nazionale, Naples), probably a copy rather than an original piece from the "Tazza" was rediscovered in 1955. It was apparently used for printmaking, and pulls from it were taken from a fairly early date onward. Two figures in early-18th-century dress, standing on pedestals, flank the medallion. The man holds a hat, the woman a fan. They are rendered against a crudely hatched background with drapery.The roundel on the underside shows the nude figure of an angel next to a truncated tree. This may illustrate I Kings 19:4-5, in which Elijah, resting under a juniper tree, is awakened by an angel who gives him food. Saint John the Baptist Going out into the Wilderness, anonymous, c. 1540 Round stained glass with the presentation of the departure of Johannes the Baptist to the desert. In the foreground, in the middle, it is portrayed how Johannes says goodbye to his parents, Zacharias and Elisabeth, to withdraw into the desert. A horn hangs on his hip, symbol of the salvation of the Lord. A few women and men watch on the left. The scene is set on an elevation for a building in Renaissance style.
