Plate with imaginary portrait of the tragic poet Moschion 1811-18 Sèvres Manufactory French The decorators at Sèvres painted cameos in a way that convincingly captures the stones' translucency. This plate was one of seventy-two in the service iconographique grec. One set went to Napoleon's uncle Cardinal Fesch, another to a member of Pope Pius VII's entourage.Images of cameos proliferated on objects of all sorts during the age of Neoclassicism. Some were copies, some inventions, but all owed their origins to Greco-Roman antiquity. By implication, these adaptations underscored the owner's erudition and sober good taste. . Folding ranger with a thin leather leaf, which is a l'Anglaise mounted on the frame of turtle. The frame is partially cut out with circles and drip shapes. At the front on the leaf a brightly colored representation with as a central figure probably the royal daughter Psyche, who was brought to his palace by the - for her invisible God. She was seated in a rich interior at a table with a flying cupid (amor) Next to him, for a bed with canopy. On the table golden plates and scales, which are provided by a woman to the left of the table. To the right of psyche a woman comes to the buffet with golden crockery. Are these two women's Psyche's sisters who encourage her driven by envy to unravel the secret identity of her loved one, who visited her only at night (in the dark!) A third woman is standing next to a golden cooler and loves one in her hand. Links a group of musicing men. The figures are dressed in historic costumes. The back is covered with red floral silk. To the window à jour, extracted voluntary curls with shell and leaf ornament and filling diamondwork. Cameo Portraying Emperor Claudius as Jupiter 41 CE-54 CE Italy. This exquisite cameo is thought to combine a portrait of the fourth Roman emperor, Claudius (r. AD 41ñ54), and the powerfully muscled body of Romeís supreme deity, Jupiter. The figure is nude except for an aegis (protective garment) wrapped around his right thigh, modestly drawn across his body, and draped over his left arm. A laurel wreath is tied around his head. A long scepter rests against his left forearm, and he holds a thunderbolt in his right hand. An eagle watches him from the ground. The aegis, thunderbolt, and eagle are symbols of Jupiter; the scepter and laurel wreath are those of the imperial office. Shield ca. 1535 Attributed to Girolamo da Treviso Italian This is one of a small group of Renaissance pageant shields painted on both their interiors and exteriors with scenes from Roman history and Classical mythology in grisaille (tones of gray) on a ground of gold leaf. Many of the details are rendered in sgraffito (the technique of scratching through a surface to reveal a different color underneath, in this case, gold). The gold thus exposed is impressed with comma-shaped marks to heighten its light-reflecting quality. Girolamo da Treviso was one of the few sixteenth-century artists to employ the demanding sgraffito technique, which had gone out of fashion by the late fifteenth century.The battle scenes on the inside of the shield, perhaps illustrating episodes from the life of the Roman general Scipio, show a keen observation of Classical costume and armor, both of which were known from antique sculpture and coins.
