Armorial dish: The story of King Anius. Artist: Francesco Xanto Avelli da Rovigo (Italian, Rovigo ca.1487-1542). Dimensions: Diam. 10 3/8 in. (26.4 cm). Date: 1532.This splendid plate formed part of one of the largest majolica services ever made, commissioned by Piero Maria Pucci (1467-1547) of Florence, whose arms are visible at the center. Highly distinguished in the first half of the sixteenth century, Pucci family members served under the Medici popes Leo X (r. 1513-21) and Clement VII (r. 1523-34). Thirty-seven pieces from the maiolica service survive (including four in the Lehman Collection: see also 1975.1.1131; 1975.1.1135; 1975.1.1137), all painted in Urbino by the celebrated maiolica painter Francesco Xanto Avelli da Rovigo in 1532 and 1533. Some pieces were sent to Gubbio to be completed with luster decoration under Xanto's direction.The plate depicts the story of King Anius' daughters, who escaped imprisonment by Agamemnon when Dionysus turned them into doves. Plate 1720-50 French, Rouen or Sinceny Faience, or tin-glazed and enameled earthenware, first emerged in France during the sixteenth century, reaching widespread usage among elite patrons during the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, prior to the establishment of soft-paste porcelain factories. Although characterized as more provincial in style than porcelain, French faience was used at the court of Louis XIV as part of elaborate meals and displays, with large-scale vessels incorporated into the Baroque garden designs of Versailles. Earlier examples of French faience attest to the strong influence of maiolica artists from Italy. Later works demonstrate the ways in which cities such as Nevers, Rouen, Lyon, Moustiers, and Marseille developed innovative vessel shapes and decorative motifs prized among collectors throughout Europe. Date: ca. 1650.The Temptation of Adam and Eve was one of the most popular subjects to be depicted on English "blue-dash" chargers. This example, dating to about 1650, is among the earliest. It is part of a group of seven chargers with depictions of Adam and Eve that are notably more naturalistic than the more typical crude renderings. Dish. The running putto on this dish has been vividly rendered with loose brushstrokes and stark shadows. The alternatingbroad and narrow trapezium-shaped panels with plant motifs on the rim are derived from Chinese porcelain. The copying of Asian decorations would later also play a major role in the development of Delftware.

Plate 1791 Sèvres Manufactory French Porcelain decorated with a black ground in imitation of Asian lacquer was produced at Sèvres for about a fifteen-year period beginning in 1790. Furniture decorated with imported black lacquer panels saw a resurgence of popularity in the last two decades of the eighteenth century, and the Sèvres factory's efforts to simulate black lacquer on porcelain were probably stimulated by this renewed general interest in lacquer decoration. Black-ground Sèvres porcelain was decorated with chinoiserie scenes executed in gold, which was often applied in subtle tones of yellow, green, and red. Small decorative highlights were often executed in platinum, and the ability to apply platinumfirst mastered by the factory in 1790may have been an impetus to produce these lacquer-inspired pieces.[Jeffrey H. Table screen with immortals China 17th century The table screen features a traditional Taoist scene: Eight Immortals offering birthday greetings to the Deity of Longevity (Shoulao). The deity, with his iconic enlarged bald cranium, sits on a rocky prominence flanked by ornamental garden rocks, leafy plants, and pine trees. Overhead, auspicious clouds frame the circular orbs of the sun and moon (identified by inscribed characters (ri and yue). In the foreground, the Eight Immortals in two lines bear giftsa peach of longevity, cup of wine, magic gourd, and a magic fungus (lingzhi); play music on a flute or clappers; or hold their attributes. A crane, another symbol of longevity, dances at the center of the group. Under the rock where Shoulao is seated are four incised characters that convey every scholars aspiration: ci jinshi di or confer the jinshi degree, the highest degree in the imperial civil service exam. The virtuosity of its wares, notable for their dense patterns of shimmering gold, often accented with blue, was renowned. This examples decoration with a seascape populated by revelers, aquatic creatures, and the youthful Bacchus (god of wine) in a chariot is well-suited to the coolers function. The long tails and the baroque structure of the pattern are unusual and cannot be traced back to examples from pattern books. The walnut stick is put on the screen from a nodus. Porcelain painted by Charles-Nicolas Dodin (French, 1734 - 1803) Copied from an engraving by André Laurent (1708 - 1747) Sèvres Manufactory, manufacturer (French, founded 1756) 1762 In 1758 the Sèvres porcelain manufactory introduced this shape, designed to be mounted onto a small table. The manufactory named the form, described in the Sèvres archives as a plateau de Courteille ou de chiffonière, after the marquis de Courteille, one of Louis XV's financiers, who represented the king's interest at Sèvres from 1751. The Sèvres artist Charles-Nicolas Dodin copied the scene from a painting by François Boucher onto the plaque. The original painting was set into wood paneling above a door in an important Parisian townhouse, the Hôtel de Soubise. It became one of Boucher's most popular scenes in the 1700s, known through many prints that circulated widely throughout Europe.

Tray (Batea) with Turnus Provoked into War by Aeneas ca. 1764 José Manuel de la Cerda This exceptional lacquerware tray (batea) is the work of José Manuel de la Cerda, an Indigenous artist active in Pátzcuaro (Michoacán) in west-central Mexico during the mid-18th century. De la Cerdas highly inventive lacquerware exemplifies the ways in which local artistic traditions in New Spain were profoundly transformed by the presence of imported art objects from both Europe and Asia. Using a pre-Hispanic lacquer technique, De la Cerdas batea features a rarely depicted episode from Virgils Aeneid in combination with ornamentation inspired by East Asian lacquerware as well as European chinoiserie. The batea provides visual evidence of the cultural consequences of Mexicos unusual status as a nexus of both transpacific and transatlantic trade..
