Hercules and Nessus. Artist: Annibale Fontana (Italian, 1540-1587). Culture: Italian, Milan. Dimensions: H. 3-1/16 x W. 4-1/16 in. (7.8 x 10.3 cm). Date: before 1584.One of the major glyptic artists working in Milan during the second half of the sixteenth century, Fontana engraved exquisitely luminous Late Mannerist scenes from classical mythology and biblical subjects in rock crystal. A casket, set with Fontana's rock-crystal plaques and made for Albrecht V, duke of Bavaria (r. 1550-79), can still to be seen in the Schatzkammer of the Munich Residenz. The Metropolitan Museum's medallion is one of a series of six surviving rock crystals engraved with episodes from the story of Hercules; the medallions were removed from a casket, now destroyed, that once belonged to the Gonzaga duke of Mantua, Vincenzo I (r. 1587-1612). The casket, ornamented with gold and pearls, would have been highly valued as a splendid example of Milanese goldsmiths' work, as well as of intaglio engraving. Museum:

Triumph of Ceres probably late 16th-early 17th century Suzanne de Court French The only female to earn a reputation in the enamel workshops of Limoges in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, Suzanne de Court may have been the daughter of Jean de Court (active 1550-1600). If so, she descends from one of the great dynastic families of enamellers in Renaissance France, artisans permitted to practice only by royal edict. The Lehman ewer, decorated with a brilliant combination of translucent enamel and grisaille, is divided into two narrative zones by a band of black arabesques on a white ground. The top zone illustrates the triumphal procession of Ceres in a landscape of turquoise green foliage; this scene is based on an earlier engraving. The bottom zone, drawn from a woodcut illustration, is taken from the story of Moses and the Daughters of Jethro as told in Exodus: "Moses fled from Pharaoh, and stayed in the land of Midian; and he sat down by a well. Display dish with Charles II (1630-1685) in a tree ca. 1680 Thomas Toft There are numerous large dishes from the late seventeenth century inscribed with the name Thomas Toft. This North Staffordshire potter, possibly of Scandinavian origin, used traditional pottery techniques but more ambitiously than any potter up to that time. Here, a white clay slip was applied over the upper surface of the charger; the design was then drawn and filled in with dark brown and orange red clay slips. The honey-colored lead glaze was applied to only this decorated surface, not to the underside, turning the stark white ground a pale yellow and harmonizing with the earth colors of the design. A lion and a unicorn, supporters of the royal coat of arms of England and Scotland, are rampant to each side of a spreading oak tree enclosing a young face by its spreading branches, with the letters "CR," for Charles Rex, below. This reference is to a popular true story that Charles II related to Samuel Pepys in 168

Cheval fire screen ca. 1755-60 Panel attributed to Thomas Moore British Made for the Countess of Shaftesbury (d. 1758) for Saint Giles's House, Dorset, this fire screen has a Rococo frame that is related to designs by Thomas Chippendale (The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754). The panel, based on a cartoon made for the Savonnerie manufactory in Paris, was woven in England, probably by Thomas Whitty at Axminister. Charger 1877 John Bennett The rare charger embodies John Bennetts penchant for Anglo-Japanese style, one of the defining characteristics of the Aesthetic Movement. Painted the same year that Bennett immigrated to New York from England, the charger strongly relates to an earlier example of Doulton Pottery, where Bennett developed and taught his method of underglaze decoration. The subject of two cranes deviates from Bennetts more typical floral and plant motifs with pronounced dark outlines as seen on the large vase with dogwood blossoms (1984.425) also in the collection.. Folding range with double sheet of paper, on which a round, cut out stopping engraving representing a sitting woman surrounded by lovers with a chinoiserie figure with silk clothes on either side, on an ajour cut frame of bone, francis wheatley (Possible), c. 1790 This fan is a European imitation of a Chinese type, which had developed in Canton in the course of the 18th century from a 17th century South Chinese model. These Cantonese fans, who were sought because of the particularly large number of small figures with minitious faces painted on ivory, were called 'a hundred faces' fans. Unlike their Chinese examples, the characters on the European imitations not only have a face but also a neck of ivory. The clothing of the warrior and the female is composed of glued pieces of satin and mother -of -pearl. The chinoiserie-like effect is emphasized by the exotic-looking environment in which these figures are placed. A symmetrical, classicist ornament on the back of the leaf. print maker:
