Fan. Culture: probably Scottish. Date: second quarter 18th century. The luminous pastel colors are an outstanding feature of this fan. Typical of fan designs, this one is replete with contrasting imagery. The elaborate sticks have a decidedly Chinese aesthetic but depict the Three Graces from Greek mythology that represent joy, charm, and beauty. This imagery in turn contrasts greatly with the pastoral scene of a goat herder. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

The Fall of Phaeton third quarter 19th century Adolphe David Phaeton, son of the sun god Apollo, rashly insisted on driving his father's chariot. Here, we witness the outset of his inexorable descent through the heavens after losing control of the quadriga. For this tour de force, Adolphe David drew on ancient glyptic typologies. He cut through three strata to set off the foremost horse and clouds in ocher and made reins from the threadlike remains of the middle white layer. Equally finely characterized at the top left are three signs of the zodiac. All are set against deathly, polished jet black. The sizable gem was conceived as an exhibition performance; David often showed cameos at the Paris Salon.. The Fall of Phaeton 198593

The square pylons are faced with white Ural marble and elaborately patterned ceramic tile and the plastered ceiling is decorated with a series of frescoes by various artists depicting life in Ukraine. A large mosaic at the end of the platform commemorates the 300th anniversary of the reunification of Russia and Ukraine. The architects were L. V. Lile, V. A. Litvinov, M. F. Markovsky, and V. M. Dobrokovsky.

Madonna and Child cameo ca. 1500, mount 19th century French or Franco-Flemish The composition, with tenderly interacting figures, is arranged in the manner of early Netherlandish paintings of Madonnas. The Italian Renaissance brought with it a wholehearted embrace of classical antiquity throughout the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Emulation of ancient cameos played a large part. Carvers invested ancient myths with increasingly refined compositions and techniques, paying close attention to the latest archaeological discoveries. Demand for Italian carvers took them to all the courts of Europe. Milan in particular developed a taste for cameos with wondrous atmospheric effects.. Madonna and Child 198262
