Dish with Cimon and Pero. Dish of pottery, covered on front and back with tining acid. At the front in the flat multicolor the representation of Cimon and Pero (Caritas Romana). Pero Cimon gives the chest in the dungeon. The child is bound on her back. Three men look through a tranchen window. The colors are blue, brown, green, yellow and purple. To show the show a border of stylized tendrils in brown and blue. The edge of the dish is painted with rollerwork motifs between which fruit baskets, horn blowing genius and dogs, in blue and brown, green and purple on yellow soil. The back is decorated with flower drinks and line motifs in blue, brown, yellow and green on white ground.

Plate ca. 1791 Sèvres Manufactory French Porcelain decorated with a black ground in imitation of Asian lacquer was produced at Sèvres for about a fifteen-year period beginning in 1790. Furniture decorated with imported black lacquer panels saw a resurgence of popularity in the last two decades of the eighteenth century, and the Sèvres factory's efforts to simulate black lacquer on porcelain were probably stimulated by this renewed general interest in lacquer decoration. Black-ground Sèvres porcelain was decorated with chinoiserie scenes executed in gold, which was often applied in subtle tones of yellow, green, and red. Small decorative highlights were often executed in platinum, and the ability to apply platinumfirst mastered by the factory in 1790may have been an impetus to produce these lacquer-inspired pieces.[Jeffrey H. Although characterized as more provincial in style than porcelain, French faience was used at the court of Louis XIV as part of elaborate meals and displays, with large-scale vessels incorporated into the Baroque garden designs of Versailles. Earlier examples of French faience attest to the strong influence of maiolica artists from Italy. Later works demonstrate the ways in which cities such as Nevers, Rouen, Lyon, Moustiers, and Marseille developed innovative vessel shapes and decorative motifs prized among collectors throughout Europe. Plate 1807-8 Sèvres Manufactory French This plate was one of seventy-eight plates belonging to a set described in the Sèvres factory archives of 1808 as a "Dessert service with dark blue ground, figures in brown heightened with gold on pebbled ground, etc." The process of decoration as described in the factory archives reveals the order of the labor. The blue ground of the border was applied first, followed by the marbled ground of the center, which had to be executed in two layers, each of which required a firing. The gilding of the border was applied next, and lastly the figural decoration of the center was painted. A final application of gold must have been required for the gilt highlights of the central figure scene.The sales ledgers indicate that it cost 51 francs to produce each plate, but the factory decided to sell them at a loss at 40 francs each. Platter (one of a set) ca. 1745 Doccia Porcelain Manufactory Italian The first factory in Italy to produce hard-paste porcelain was founded in Venice in 1720 by Francesco Vezzi (Italian, 1651-1740), but this enterprise was short-lived and closed in 1727. A far more ambitious and successful hard-paste porcelain factory was established ten years later outside of Florence at Doccia by Carlo Ginori (Italian, 1702- 1757), and it became one of the most significant European factories during the eighteenth century. The Doccia factory, as it is commonly known, continued after Ginoris death and remained under family control until merging with a Milanese firm at the end of the nineteenth century, but Doccias period of greatest artistic innovation took place under Carlo Ginoris directorship from 1737 to 1757.[1Considerable recent scholarship on the Ginori factory has underscored both the political circumstances in Florence at the time the factory was established and the importance of Ginoris

Plate from the "Service Des Départements" 1827 Sèvres Manufactory French This plate is from a service known as the "Service des Départements" that was produced at Sèvres in 1827. The idea for the service was conceived in 1824 by Alexandre Brongniart (1770-1847), director of the factory, to commemorate the coronation of Charles X. Each plate in the service was to be painted with a famous topographical view from each of the départements (administrative units) of France. The border was to be decorated with small cameo portraits of famous figures from the region, as well as various attributes or trophies symbolizing the major industries, products, and arts of the area. These attributes and the cameo portraits are identified in black enamel script fired on the back of each plate.Due to the complexity of designing and then decorating each plate, the service was never completed, and its high cost discouraged Charles X from acquiring it.
