Date: ca. 1723-35.A Chinese plate painted with this exact composition must have served as a model for the painters at the Bow factory in England, for a Bow plate in the Museum's collection (2014.600) is decorated with precisely the same composition executed in a very similar palette. Surprisingly, one is able to match a piece of British or European porcelain with a Chinese prototype relatively rarely, and it is even more unusual to find an original model that has been copied with such fidelity. This Chinese plate makes an extremely interesting comparison with the Bow example, and both the similarities and slight differences between the two are instructive, as it reflects both the type of Chinese porcelain being imported into England in the second quarter of the eighteenth century and how chinoiserie-decorated porcelains were marketed to English consumers in the middle de

Plate, c. 500-800 CE, 12 1/2 in. (31.75 cm) (diameter), Clay, pigments, Mexico or Guatemala, 7th-9th century, Among the Maya, members of the nobility offered elaborately painted vessels to each other as gifts to maintain political and social connections among leading families. They often commissioned these items from scribes, literate aristocrats who painted images and wrote hieroglyphic texts on ceramics and in codices (singular: codex; books on bark paper). Painted ceramics also functioned as serving dishes for important feasts and for making offerings. Maya ceramic painting reached its peak between 600 and 900, when artists produced innovative designs combining hieroglyphs with geometric elements, and images of humans and gods. The central figure here is the Maize God, the most important Maya god. He is recognizable by his unique attributes including his head and hairdo, elongated to imitate the shape of an ear of corn and cornsilk, and the red body paint covering all but his face.

Grandvilles popular lithograph series, Les Métamorphoses du jour (1829), which used animal caricatures to mock and satirize French society, on this charming plate made for the middle-class market. A dandy in the guise of a hare appears to have been caught in an affair by a rustic hunting dog returning home with his rifle. Grandville was an ardent republican, and fought in the July Revolution of 1830 alongside fellow caricaturist Honoré Daumier. Caricatures mocking the government were particularly risky after 1835, when the strict censorship laws on caricature were reinstated. View more. The Wedding Feast of Cupid and Psyche 1558 Pierre Reymond Enameling is a technique whereby a vitreous substance, often containing pigment, is fused with metal to produce a glossy surface. Limoges became a center for enameling as early as the twelfth century, when the art flourished in monastic workshops. In the late fifteenth century, this city in central France emerged as a center of secular as well as ecclesiastical enamelwork, and the school flourished throughout the sixteenth century. Among the most famous and prolific of the enamel painters practicing in sixteenth-century Limoges was Pierre Reymond (1513-after 1584), the author of this dish. Reymond's mastery of his medium is evident in the rich tonal range, the accurate modeling of his figures, and the sense of life and action. Fountain and basin ca. 1727-32 Meissen Manufactory German This table fountain was intended to be used for the washing of hands, although it may have been created as much for its decorative value as for its functionality. The fountain is composed of three sections. A standing figure of Neptune carries a shell above his shoulders, and one foot rests on the head of a dolphin from whose mouth a silver spigot emerges. Beneath Neptune, there is a separate plinth decorated with two satyrs, who support a shell-like form that serves as the base for the figure above. A basin in the form of a large shell sits below, partially contained within the recessed, lower section of the plinth. The figure of Neptune is only summarily finished on the back, while the back of the plinth is entirely flat, indicating that the fountain and basin were intended to be placed against a vertical surface. While two of the figures wear scholars clothing, the short cape of leaves adorning the shoulders of the man seated at center right identifies him as a Daoist immortal. The scene looks like a terrace and is against a blue-green background in gouache. On either side four red pink flowers and floral motifs in gold paint. The colored copper engraving at the rear of the leaf shows a man in suit inspired by the Middle Ages; In his right hand he holds the rein from a white horse behind him; Opposite him a woman who fills a hand with one hand and points to the man with the other; On the edge of the image: F.C.
