Date: ca. 1510-20.Regarded as one of the most beautiful pieces of maiolica (a refined tin-glazed pottery) ever made, this bowl is splendidly decorated with symbols of papal authority, such as keys and the tiara, and personal references to Pope Julius II della Rovere and his family, such as the oak tree. Julius probably commissioned the bowl for his supporter, the Bolognese envoy Melchiorre di Giorgio Manzoli--whose coat of arms appears at the lower edge--to commemorate the reestablishment of papal rule in Bologna in 1506. Giovanni Maria Vasaro, whose name is inscribed on the back, may have been the painter or the owner of the workshop in Castel Durante that produced the bowl. The idea for the service was conceived in 1824 by Alexandre Brongniart (1770-1847), director of the factory, to commemorate the coronation of Charles X. Platter second half 19th century Manner of Bernard Palissy French The sixteenth century was marked by a scientific interest in natural phenomena. New worlds had been discovered, occupied by animals and human beings never before seen in Europe. Museums of curiosities abounded, and self-styled naturalists, such as Cosimo de' Medici, gilded armadillos from the Americas and placed them on pillars in their palaces. Native Indians of the Americas toured the courts of Europe, and the taste for the exotic flourished. It was in this atmosphere that the talented French potter Bernard Palissy began practicing his trade. An enthusiastic natural scientist, Palissy used local fish, plants and reptileshe made casts of actual specimens for use in his modelingfashioned in a range of colored glazes, to develop what he called "pastoral pottery." Settee designed ca. 1786, woven 1790-91; settee frame second half 19th century Tapestry upholstery by Beauvais Tapestry-woven upholstery for two settees and twelve armchairs was commissioned at the same time as the wall hangings depicting the Four Continents (1978.404.1-.4).¹ The Four Continents was one of two suites-each including four wall tapestries and coordinating seating furniture-that were ordered from Beauvais in 1786; the subject of the other suite was to be a series illustrating the arts, sciences, agriculture, and commerce.
