Cabinet with personifications of the Five Senses third quarter 17th century British Raised work, or stumpwork as it is sometimes called, developed in England during the early seventeenth century, and was characterized by its high relief. The technique was used to create pictures and to decorate objects such as storage boxes for jewelry and writing supplies, baskets, and mirror frames. This box is typical of raised-work pieces in that it employs a variety of stitches and includes the use of metal thread and other materials, in addition to colored silks. The faces of the five women representing the Senses are drawn in ink on satin, and the figure of Sight holds a mirror made of mica that reflects her face. Other unexpected materials were frequently used to highlight details: real hair for a figure's head, tiny seed pearls for a necklace, and glass beads for animal eyes.Allegorical and biblical subjects, along with portraits of monarchs, were the most common themes for the decoration of a

Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane 1520-30 German, Augsburg or Nuremberg These sculptural reliefs (2015.388.1-.4) display extraordinary, jewel-like enameling accomplished through an innovative technique involving molten glass paste built up over an armature of gold wires on a silver base. In expressive detail, they represent four scenes of Christs Passion at a tiny scale—fully appreciable only to those privileged enough to view the reliefs at close range. (The compositions owe more than a little to the Small Passion print series by the famous Northern Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer.) Expensive as they were, the plaques would have been worth only a fraction of the treasure in the container they decorated: most likely some lost relic, imbued with spiritual power and believed to bridge our world with the divine.[Elizabeth Cleland, 2017. Pendant with Intaglio Portrait of Anna of Austria in Enameled Frame 1800-1899 France. This portrait had been thought to date about 1570, when Anna Maria of Austria married King Phillip II of Spain. It is likely, however, this refined intaglio image was carved after a contemporary painting but in the nineteenth century. The frame executed in a delicate process known as Èmail en rÈsille sur verre emulated a seventeenth-century technique but was certainly done in the nineteenth century.. Nymph and Swan. Culture: Italian, Rome. Dimensions: Overall: 1 11/16 x 1 3/8 in. (4.3 x 3.4 cm); visible cameo: 26.9 x 18.6 mm. Maker: Cameo by Benedetto Pistrucci (Italian, 1783-1855, active England); Mount by the firm of Fortunato Pio Castellani (Italian, 1794-1865). Date: ca. 1830-40.Even the most celebrated carvers did not scruple to borrow freely from authoritative sources. Nathaniel Marchant had already treated this composition in an intaglio carved for Lavinia, Countess Spencer (private collection, United Kingdom), but Pistrucci added an original flourish of drapery. One might understandably interpret the subject as Leda and the swan had not Marchant identified it as the nymph in Ariosto's Orlando Furioso who accepts tablets bearing the names of deceased worthies from a fleet of swans (hence the disklike object proffered by the swan). Castellani's delicate "archaeological-style" setting perfectly frames the curvilinear design. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
