Bowl with the Arms of Pope Julius II and the Manzoli of Bologna surrounded by putti, cornucopiae, satyrs, dolphins, birds, etc. 1508 workshop of Giovanni Maria Vasaro This splendid bowl is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful pieces of majolica ever made. It is profusely decorated with the antique-inspired grotteschi that became popular in the early sixteenth century. The prominent oak tree beneath the papal keys and tiara, the festoons of acorns, and the shields inscribed "IV II" (for Julius II) associate this object with Pope Julius II della Rovere (r. 1503-12), whose heraldic device was the oak tree. At the lower edge the coat of arms of Melchiorre di Giorgio Manzoli, a Bolognese envoy and loyal supporter of the pope who was probably the bowl's recipient. The dense imagery, which includes emblems of both secular and spiritual authority, may commemorate the triumphal entry of the pope into Bologna in 1506 and the reestablishment of papal rule in the city.The back of the bowl

Bahram Gur and Azada 12th-13th century Some of the mina'i ceramics illustrate stories from the Persian epic, the Shahnama, predating its earliest surviving illustrated manuscripts by nearly a century. This bowl depicts the episode of Prince Bahram Gur hunting with Azada, his favorite concubine. Azada challenges Bahram Gur to a hunting feat, but when he succeeds, she pities the slain gazelles and reproaches him. In anger, he tramples her under his camels feet. Plate mid-18th century French, Rouen or Sinceny Faience, or tin-glazed and enameled earthenware, first emerged in France during the sixteenth century, reaching widespread usage among elite patrons during the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, prior to the establishment of soft-paste porcelain factories. Although characterized as more provincial in style than porcelain, French faience was used at the court of Louis XIV as part of elaborate meals and displays, with large-scale vessels incorporated into the Baroque garden designs of Versailles. Earlier examples of French faience attest to the strong influence of maiolica artists from Italy. Later works demonstrate the ways in which cities such as Nevers, Rouen, Lyon, Moustiers, and Marseille developed innovative vessel shapes and decorative motifs prized among collectors throughout Europe. Plate with landscape of the West Lake early 18th century China The principal décor on this plate depicts one of the most famous scenic spots in China: Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (Santan Yinyue) in Hangzhous West Lake. Two gentlemen sit at their leisure in a nearby water pavilion, enjoying the view of the moons reflection in the midst of three small “pagodas”. Integrating painting, calligraphy, and poetry in a work of the “Three Perfections,” the plate is further embellished with a poem on this scenic spot by the sixteenth-century poet Yang Zhou. Plaque, 1879. John Bennett (American, 1840-1907). Earthenware with underglaze painted decoration; diameter: 42.8 cm (16 7/8 in.); overall: 4.5 cm (1 3/4 in.). John Bennett was trained in England. He seems to have played a crucial role there by introducing painted decoration on ceramics at the Doulton factory in the early 1870s. Although they admired his talent, his English colleagues found Bennett had a difficult personality, and his stay at the Doulton factory was brief. By 1876 he was in New York, bringing with him the concepts of the English Aesthetic Movement: muted colors and great naturalism in the depiction of birds and flowers.

Vase (vase hollandais) 1761 Sèvres Manufactory French This piece of Sèvres porcelain comes from the Hillingdon Collection, which was founded by Sir Charles Mills (1792-1880), a partner in the great firm of Glyn, Mills, Currie and Company, bankers to the British royal family. Tradition says that Sir Charles acquired the collection during a series of visits to France in the first half of the nineteenth century. Sir Charles son was created first Baron Hillingdon in 1886. In 1937, his descendants sold the collection to the well-known art dealers Duveen Brothers. Although various collectors, such as Calouste Gulbenkian and J. Paul Getty, were interested in buying the Hillingdon Collection, ultimately the majority of the artworks, including seventeen pieces of porcelain-mounted furniture, were acquired in 1947 by the cultural foundation that had been established by the American businessman and philanthropist Samuel H. The compositions derive in part from design by Rosso Fiorentino (1494-1540), one of the Italian artists called to Fontainebleau to work for the French court.Probably made for Henry II of France (reigned 1547-59), the helmet passed as a diplomatic gift to the Medici court in Florence later in the sixteenth century. It is illustrated in a portrait of Cosimo II de' Medici (1590-1621), grand duke of Tuscany, in the Metropolitan Museum's collection (acc. no. 22.150). These two pieces of a maiolica set, produced on the occasion of childbirth, are highly unusual for their complex classical imagery and their elaborate inscriptions. New mothers in Renaissance Italy were often presented with maiolica birth sets. Although no complete set survives, these gifts consisted of five interlocking pieces: a footed broth bowl and its cover (which doubled as a plate), a drinking cup, a saltcellar, and a lid. When assembled, these objects formed a single unit and any imagery on the interiorin this case, a series of scenes from ancient mythologywas hidden from view.
