Coffret (Minnekästchen) ca. 1325-50 German The inside of this coffret's lid depicts Frau Minne, the German goddess of love, aiming and arrow at a young man. At right, he gives her his heart. The inscriptions have been interpreted as: "Gracious lady, I have surrendered," and "Lady send me solace, my heart has been wounded." The coffret embodies the notions of courtly love, a concept that developed during the feudal period and imagined romance as playful warfare between the suitor and beloved. The arms on the box may be those of the Berstett family of Alsace, Baden, and Austria.. Coffret (Minnekästchen) 471357

Prunk bowl from the courtyard service of Isabella d'Este, Mantua. A highlight of the Italian majolica production is the magnificent breaking bowl from the famous courtyard service of the Markgräfin of Mantua Isabella d'Este (1474-1539). The alliance coat of families Gonzaga and Este in the center and encrypted emblems refer to Isabella d'Este, which was one of the most important women of the Renaissance as a female conveyor and collector. The scenic representation of the mannalesis of the Old Testament follows Raffaels (1483-1520) famous fresco in the loggias of the Vatican in Rome. Majolica service adorned the princely blackboard and were built on showing views on show buffets. Mythological and biblical scenes served as a moral model and at the same time reflect the humanistic knowledge of time. Gift of Alfred Beit, London

Sideboard and Wine Cabinet 1859 London. William Burges was one of the preeminent architect-designers of the 19th-century Gothic Revival. The patterns and designs on this cabinet draw inspiration from the tracery and stained glass of Gothic cathedrals, as well as medieval manuscript illumination. In contrast to the reverent approach of fellow archictect-designer Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin, Burgesís interpretation of the Middle Ages is more playful and humorous. The scenes on the cabinetís four projecting panels are painted in brilliant colors and an abundance of gold by Nathaniel Westlake. They illustrate a 14th-century French poem called ìLe Martyre de Saint Bacchusî (The Martyrdom of Saint Bacchus). In a witty parody of the lives of the saints, the anonymous poet contended that healing the sick and consoling the unfortunate are not just the stuff of sainthood, but the work of wine as well.On the sideboard, Saint Bacchus is depicted as a handsome young man dressed in a pink medieval

Tankard early 18th century M. Schmid Schmid was among the few faience painters who signed his work. But even without signature, his style would be instantly recognizable, for no other faience painter featured these bold figures in continuous landscape around the walls of large tankards. Such plain shapes were ideal for his compositions, which ignore all inhibitions or limitations of scale that other faience painters seem to have imposed upon themselves.. Tankard 205837
