A follower of the Arts and Crafts movement, Pugin's son, Edward Welby Pugin, frequently borrowed designs and ideas that his father had produced decades earlier. The chair, with its curved klismos-type back deriving from Grecian prototypes and Gothic-style base, was designed and registered in 1870 for the Granville Hotel, Ramsgate, Kent, and manufactured by Pugin's own company.
