Date: late 16th century. This kind of bit was used in the German lands for horses carrying litters and pulling sleighs. The snaffle bit is the simplest type of horse bit, and it has an effect on the bars (part of the horses' jaw without teeth) and the corners of the lips. The scatches, the flattened triangular elements composing this mouthpiece, were slightly stronger in their effect and more resistant than the traditional conical canons also used at the time. The rings on the sides would serve to hang the bit on the headstall and attach the reins, while the triangular extensions would to help to hold the mouthpiece in place and would press the sides of the mouth when reins are pulled, helping indicating direction to the horse. This very peculiar type of mouthpiece is described in some contemporary equestrian manuals, like L'art de la cavalerie by Gaspard de Saunier (1756), as used "for preventing the tongue from going down out of the mouth, as it happens to several horses, especially to carriage horses, because of the tendency of some drivers to maintain the reins constantly tight, weakening the jaws so that the tongue goes out.". Local artists soon produced their own versions of Constatinopolitan fashions. This temple pendant of precious metals worked in cloisonné enamel or niello are local variants of the more intricately detailed works made for the Byzantine court. As in Byzantium, temple pendants may have been worn next to the face by both the men and the women of Rus. The works shown here were perhaps buried by their owners when the Mongol armies under Batu Khan sacked Kiev in 1240.. The motifs were frequently drawn from Gothic architecture, reproducing on a miniature scale complicated tracery patterns and even tiny statuettes. A number of these tiny locks were compound, with some of the mechanisms concealed from view, and required two or even three keys used in sequence to open them. It has been suggested that the greatly expanded use of locks on doors, or coffrets and other types of storage chests was a result of the increasing urbanization of life and the new emphasis on material wealth and private ownership which developed in the late Middle Ages..
