Speelbeurs probably originally of green velvet, embroidered in gold, silver thread and multicolored silk with the city coat of arms of Paris, Anonymous, c. 1670 - c. 1820 Speelbeurs probably originally from green velvet, embroidered in gold, silver thread and multicolored silk with the city coat of arms of Paris. Model: flat round bottom around which a wavy raised edge with holes, so that a cord (missing) could be drawn. On two sides, a button on the edge, with a core of wood and wounded with a vlo side, is sewn. The fabric of the raised edge has disappeared almost everywhere between the forced ornaments. The loose ornaments seem to be sewn again at the bottom with large stitches of black silk. Lined with goat leather. Decoration: The 20 bulges or 'ribs' were decorated with alternating stacked ornaments. A horizontal line of silver wire ran just below edge. Along the top you can only see a small leftover of the passement that originally camouflaged the seam between lining and dust. TheLozenge-Shaped Dish with Garden Scene. Culture: China. Dimensions: H. 1 1/8 in. (2.9 cm); W. 8 1/2 in. (21.6 cm); L. 11 1/4 in. (28.6 cm). Date: late 16th-17th century. The use of an extremely thin piece of shell in combination with gold and silver foil began in second half of the sixteenth century and continued until the eighteenth. The theme of literati gentlemen enjoying a garden, often found in arts of the late Ming period, included groups of stock figures such as those in the pavilion, often based on woodblock prints. Gathered here are musicians playing a mouth organ (sheng), a zither (also sheng but written with a different character), and possibly clappers. One young attendant carries another type of zither (qin), suggesting that the gentlemen will be joining their fellow musicians in the pavilion. The fact that the engraved coat of arms, with a laurel wreath and an inscription, are squeezed between two of the large flowers indicates that they may have been added at a later date. These dishes were possibly made as stock pieces rather than for a special commission.LiteratureEuropean Silver. Sale cat., Sothebys, Geneva, May 12, 1983, p. 45, no. 105.Judit H. Kolba. Furniture decorated with imported black lacquer panels saw a resurgence of popularity in the last two decades of the eighteenth century, and the Sèvres factory's efforts to simulate black lacquer on porcelain were probably stimulated by this renewed general interest in lacquer decoration. Black-ground Sèvres porcelain was decorated with chinoiserie scenes executed in gold, which was often applied in subtle tones of yellow, green, and red. Small decorative highlights were often executed in platinum, and the ability to apply platinumfirst mastered by the factory in 1790may have been an impetus to produce these lacquer-inspired pieces.[Jeffrey H. Dish 447241Dish with long-tailed birds and hibiscuses mid-14th century Attributed to Zhang Cheng Several features help date this remarkable dish to the fourteenth century. Two birds circle one another playfully in a composition suited to the circular shape. The lush hollyhock blossoms, shown from multiple perspectives, have petals of different sizes that overlap to suggest depth. Long, narrow leaves fill at least three layers of carving, adding to the richness of the surface. The unworked dark background seen here is more commonly found in earlier carved lacquers.. Parisian goldsmiths made a wide range of small, personal articles such as snuffboxes; étuis to hold sealing wax, tweezers, or utensils for sewing; souvenirs, which contained thin ivory tablets for note taking; and shuttles for knotting lace. Gold snuffboxes and boxes decorated with portrait miniatures were prized and frequently given as royal gifts, often to ambassadors or members of the court in lieu of cash payments for their services. Coveted and admired, these boxes were produced from a variety of materials. The best were skillfully made of gold and embellished with diamonds, enameled decoration, lacquer, and other luxurious materials. By the middle of the century, the taking of snuff had become an entrenched social ritual, and the snuffbox, too, had become an important social prop. Snuffboxes were considered highly fashionable accessories, with some merchants adCushion with embroidery, Anonymous, 1736 - 1795 Kisses, embroidered circles with meander and dragon motifs.
