Francesco I deMedici (1541-1587) established a ceramic workshop in the 1560s with the intention of imitation Chinese blue-and-white porcelain. It took approximately ten years of experimentation before the workshop could manufacture the type of porcelain known as soft-paste. While so-called Medici porcelain lacks the ingredients that comprise hard-paste porcelain as made by the Chinese the Medici potters were able to craft a fine white ceramic body with cobalt decoration that represented an outstanding technical achievement for its time. Technically difficult and expensive to make, Medici porcelain was produced in very small quantities, and manufacture is believed to have ceased, or at least significantly diminished with the death of Francesco in 1587. During the partnership, the factory sought to rebuild its former eighteenth-century reputation in porcelain and known for Renaissance-inspired designs. With the establishment of the Royal Worcester Porcelain Company in 1862, the company gradually gained recognition for its Japanese-inspired designs, which formed part of Japonisme, a collective fascination with Japan that took place in Europe and the United States following the opening of Japanese markets to the West by Commodore Perry in 1853. Culture: Chinese, probably for Dutch market. Dimensions: Overall: 11 13/16 × 8 3/8 in. (30 × 21.3 cm). Date: ca. 1710.This model of coffeepot appears to be the earliest produced in China for export to Europe. Its tall, tapering octagonal form was influenced both by Dutch Delftware coffeepots and by English silver coffeepots. This early production of coffeepots for export to the West reflects the speed with which the Chinese export ceramic industry responded to the growing demand for coffee wares in Europe. This form proved hard to fire because of its straight sides and angles, and it soon was replaced by a more easily produced cylindrical model.
