Finial with Arabic Inscription"Ya, Da'im" ("Oh, Everlasting!") 17th century Finials such as this example likely came from the tops of standards ('alams) carried in Shi'i processions to commemorate the martyrdom of Husain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, at the battle of Karbala. The 'alams signify the battle standards carried by Husain and his band of supporters. These finials are datable to the seventeenth century, a period in which the Shi'i religious orthodoxy was particularly pronounced in Iran.. . In antiquity sound played a major role in the Buddhist communities of Java. The bronze finial once adorned the top of a monks staff. The nine rings suspended from it would have jingled as he passed by, producing a purifying sound and also encouraging people to give alms. A Buddhist priest would use the handbell during a ritual, both to ward off evil spirits and to entreat the Buddhist deities.

Vajracharya Priest's Crown. Culture: Nepal. Dimensions: H. 12 in. (30.5 cm); W. 7 1/2 in. (19.1 cm); D. 6 3/4 in. (17.1 cm). Date: dated 1717.Elaborate crowns such as this example were worn by the hereditary Vajracarya Buddhist priests of Nepal, who occupy the highest rank in the Nepalese Buddhist community. Vajracarya is both a caste and a family name, and the designation entitles it holders to perform reserved priestly functions, analogous to the privileges held by Brahmans in Hinduism. This crown is dominated by five diadem plaques and surmounted by a half-vajra. The dated inscription records that it was commissioned by two named devotees, to be worn on the occasion of the consecration of newly installed icons of Chakrasamvara and Heruka. The consecrations were performed by sri Bekhasi deva Vajracarya of Naka Bahica of OBaha, "on Thursday, the 10th of the dark half of Bhadra, during the Pusya naksatra and the Siddha yoga" (1717). The inscription concludes by listing the punishments

The most ancient regalia used in the most solemn Coronation rite for the anointing of the sovereign - the golden ampulla and the spoon. The Ampulla, in the form of an eagle made of gold, is filled with consecrated oil and poured through the beak onto the Anointing Spoon. Although the head was probably made by Sir Robert Vyner at the time of the Restoration, it is thought that the body is of earlier origin. The spoon, whose handle is seven inches long, has a ridge in the bowl that divides the

Deity Earring with Vishnu on Garuda (front) and chepu (monster mask) (back), 1600s or 1700s. Nepal, Kathmandu Valley. Gold set with precious and semi-precious stones; 9.5 x 6.9 cm (3 3/4 x 2 11/16 in.). A green Vishnu with four arms, each holding his attributes of discus (his upper right hand), mace (upper left), lotus (lower right), and conch (in pearl, lower left) rides on a coral Garuda with lapis wings, arms outstretched. The blue figures on either side are probably celestial beings praising him in dance postures, with one leg crossed over the other. On the back side, delicate filigree floral scrolls form the backdrop of a protective mask popular in Nepal; a sun over a crescent moon are inlaid above his head.

Shrine 1598-1600 Matthias Walbaum A splendid showcase of multiple materials and techniques, this miniature triptych was designed to inspire the private devotions of its owner (perhaps one of the Cardinals Madruzzo, successive Prince-Bishops of Trent). With precious metal tracery applied to expensive ebony, its hinged wooden doors invite handling. They lead not into a tiny Gothic chapel but onto an illusionistic nighttime landscape, busy with worshippers adoring the Christ Child. Both artists signed this glorious collaboration; Walbaum, as one of wealthy Augsburgs most renowned goldsmiths, would probably have been the more vaunted of the two. Walbaum and Mozart worked together on at least one other, strikingly similar, miniature triptych.[Elizabeth Cleland, 2017. Shrine. Miniatures by Anton Mozart (German, Augsburg 1573-1625 Augsburg). Christmas Crib. Christmas cribs were used for private worship at home, and in cloisters and churches too. On Christmas day, a crib was placed on the high altar and churchgoers would bring their own cribs. As the priest shook the crib and began to sing, the congregation would join in. The church would fill with the sound of Christmas carols and the chimes of the bells attached to the cribs.

Processional Cross (qäqwami mäsqäl) 15th-16th century Amhara or Tigrinya peoples This ornately cast cross was originally positioned at the summit of a staff carried by an Ethiopian Orthodox Christian priest. The artist has created a symmetrical design that repeats the form of the cross ad infinitum, emphasizing its importance through repetition. The major motif is a pattée cross, a square cross with flaring crossbars of even lengths. At least three of these crosses nest within one another, the spaces between them filled with diamond and geometric interlace patterns. Seven smaller pattée crosses form finials to the crossbars and emerge from the diagonals, creating a rhythmic step pattern that expands and contracts around the perimeter. Images of Christ are rare in Ethiopian crosses, reflecting Ethiopian Orthodoxy's dual belief in the cross as a sign of the Crucifixion and the Tree of Paradise. Thus, the small pattée crosses sprouting from the summit and sides of the frame may allude to

The most revered Hindu site in Nepal is the extensive Pashupatinath Temple complex, five kilometres east of central Kathmandu. The focus of devotion here is a large silver Shivalingam with four faces of Shiva carved on its sides, making it a 'Chaturmukhi-Linga', or four-faced Shivalingam. Pashupati is one of Shivas 1,008 names, his manifestation as 'Lord of all Beasts' (pashu means 'beasts', pati means 'lord'); he is considered the guardian deity of Nepal. The main temple building around the Shivalingam was built under King Birpalendra Malla in 1696, however the temple is said to have already existed before 533 CE. In 733 CE, King Jayadeva II erected in its precincts a stone tablet which chronicled all the kings of Nepal, beginning with the sun god. During the Muslim raids of 1349 the temple was largely destroyed, but in 1381 Jayasinharama Varddhana of Banepa restored it. Further renovations were conducted towards the end of the Malla period, and the latest extensive improvements wer

Du Fu (Dù Fu; Wade-Giles: Tu Fu, 712-770) was a prominent Chinese poet of the Tang Dynasty. Along with Li Bai (Li Bo), he is frequently called the greatest of the Chinese poets. In 759 Du Fu moved to Chengdu, built a thatched hut near the Flower Rinsing Creek and lived there for four years. The 'thatched hut' period was the peak of Du Fu's creativity. He wrote two hundred and forty poems, among them: 'My Thatched Hut was torn apart by Autumn Wind' and 'The Prime Minister of Shu'. Chengdu, known formerly as Chengtu, is the capital of Sichuan province in Southwest China. In the early 4th century BCE, the 9th Kaiming king of the ancient Shu moved his capital to the city's current location from today's nearby Pixian.
