This model seems to have been produced at Meissen for a short time, and most surviving examples were decorated outside the factory. It is possible that the factory decided the form was too old-fashioned and sold existing, undecorated models to independent porcelain painters known as Hausmalers. This teapot was decorated at the Aufenwerth workshop in Augsburg. Ceramics-PorcelainBeaker with Apes ca. 1425-50 South Netherlandish One of the finest surviving examples of medieval enamel created for a princely table, this beaker was probably made for the Burgundian court. It illustrates a popular legend that remarks on the folly of man. A peddler is robbed by a band of apes as he sleeps. The peddler, seen just above the base, fails to stir even as the apes strip away his clothes. Other apes, having taken his goods, cavort in the branches overhead. The beaker, which originally had a cover, is decorated with "painted" enamel, so called because the material was applied freely over the silver, without the grooves that separate the colors in champlevé enameling or the incised patterns that provide guidelines for the application of translucent enamels. The unusual and adept grisaille (shades of gray) enamel technique is found on several other surviving objects, all of which have been associated with the courts of the dukes of Burgundy. It was a blazon of the cupbearer, one of the differentiated offices of the court of the Mamluk sultans. The inscription reads Husain, son of Qawsun, who was cupbearer to Muhammad b. Qalawun (al-Malik al-Nasir) (1294-1340/41). Parisian goldsmiths made a wide range of small, personal articles such as snuffboxes; étuis to hold sealing wax, tweezers, or utensils for sewing; souvenirs, which contained thin ivory tablets for note taking; and shuttles for knotting lace. Gold snuffboxes and boxes decorated with portrait miniatures were prized and frequently given as royal gifts, often to ambassadors or members of the court in lieu of cash payments for their services. Coveted and admired, these boxes were produced from a variety of materials. The best were skillfully made of gold and embellished with diamonds, enameled decoration, lacquer, and other luxurious materials. By the middle of the century, the taking of snuff had become an entrenched social ritual, and the snuffbox, too, had become an important social prop. Snuffboxes were considered highly fashionable accessories, with some merchants Ewer ca. 1350-80 (ewer); ca. 1400 (mounts) German or Rhenish A document from the 1500s tells of a search ordered by Emperor Charles IV (crowned at Rome 1355-died 1378) for semiprecious stones in the mountains northwest of Prague. A distinctive type of deep-red jasper, with large inclusions of amethyst and crystal, was found. Thousands of sheets of jasper still decorate the walls of Saint Vitus Cathedral and the chapels at Karlstejn castle built under the emperor's direction. Surviving from the same period are fewer than twenty jasper vessels made for the imperial court, among them this cup and ewer. The remains of the medieval mines are now a protected site within the Czech Republic. Listen to experts illuminate this artwork's story Listen Play or pause #3185. Date: ca. 1230-50.This paten is one of an ensemble containing some of the elements needed for the celebration of the Eucharist: the paten for the bread, the chalice to hold the wine (acc. no. 47.101.26), and, exceptionally, a straw to sip the wine (acc. no. 47.101.28). The paten includesa half-length figure of Christ holding a chalice and the Host. He is flanked by the Old Testament figures Abel, offering a lamb, and Melchisedech, clad as a bishop and raising a chalice. The fourth figure on the paten is Saint Trudpert, who holds a martyr's palm, indicating that this set of implements comes from the monastery of Saint Trudpert, near Freiburg im Breisgau. These two vases formed a garniture with the slightly earlier vase, "vase Boileau" (50.211.158a, b), and were owned by Prince Henry of Prussia.. It is unclear whether the two candlesticks were made as part of a table or toilet service or to accompany a desk set. Few porcelain candlesticks survive, largely because of the fragility of the medium.. Pair of candlesticks 207120Turban Helmet late 15th century Western Iranian, in the style of Turkman armor Helmets of this type are usually called turban helmets because of their large bulbous shape and the flutings that imitate the folds of a turban. Because certain dervish groups wore turbans wound with a prescribed number of folds to represent an important mystical number, it is likely that turban helmets were regarded not merely as armor but also a kind of religious insignia, their very shape marking the wearer as a fighter in the Holy War.Turban helmets, together with mail-and-plate armor of matching decoration, were intended for the heavy cavalry and are recorded as early as the fourteenth century. This example appears to have belonged to the dynasty of the Aq Quyunlu(White Sheep Turkoman) that ruled northwestern Iran and Anatolia in the fifteenth century. The inscriptions, damascened with gold and silver, glorify temporal rulers, wish the owner well, or give advice on how to attain virtue.. Date: ca. 1180-90.This chasse served as a container for saints' relics--often bones or pieces of cloth. The chasse depicts Christ in Majesty surrounded by saints on the lower front and the Lamb of God, emblematic of Jesus, flanked by angels on the sloping roof. Access to the sacred contents was through the locked door on one end. It shows Saint Peter, called by Jesus to be the keeper of the keys of heaven, as the guardian of the box's holy relics.Note the wonderfully varied designs of the columns and the saints' haloes, the exceptional translucent red, the scrolling pattern of the gilded ground, and the blue enamel that defines hair, brows, digits, and sinews. The design of the back simulates a costly silk textile. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.Table, Silver filigree, Rectangular hinged top, opens when knob at front is pressed.
