Culture: Japan. Dimensions: H. 9 in. (22.9 cm); W. 8 1/2 in. (21.6 cm); D. 14 5/8 in. (37.1 cm). Date: late 17th century. This portable writing box has three drawers; the two upper ones are for paper and documents, while the one at the bottom holds the inkstone, water dropper, and brushes. The cabinet is elaborately decorated with the highest quality maki-e ("sprinkled pictures"). It was produced for the Tokugawa family in one of their official maki-e workshops, probably that of the Koami family. The chrysanthemum flowers are depicted almost individually, each executed in a different hue or maki-e (flat or relief pattern) technique emphasizing the layered petal structure. Some of the flowers are shown frontally, others from the side or the back. Chrysanthemums, which represent both longevity and autumn, are often featured in classical Japanese poetry. (19.05 × 18.73 × 28.89 cm), Black lacquer with gold maki-e and mother-of-pearl and lead inlay; gilded copper fittings, Japan, 17th-18th century, On this portable storage chest, a wisteria vine emerges on the front panel (near the lock) and then meanders around the remaining sides and top. Joining the wisteria are three more springtime motifscherry blossoms on the gilt-copper lock and drawer pulls, dandelions on the front door, and a trio of dragonflies on the inside of the door. The maker used three distinct lacquer techniques to create these decorations. Gold motifs, such as the vine, stems, and some of the leaves of the wisteria, were made with gold powder applied to the surface, a uniquely Japanese technique called maki-e('sprinkled pictures'). The darker leaves are inlaid lead. The radiant blossoms and leaves are inlaid mother-of-pearl, a technique called raden that was developed in ChinaCanopic box of Hatnefer ca. 1492-1473 B.C. New Kingdom In 1936, the Museum's Egyptian Expedition discovered a rock-cut tomb on a hillside just below the offering chapel of Senenmut, one of Hatshepsut's best known officials. The tomb had been prepared for the burial of Senenmut's mother, Hatnefer, who had died in her 70s, early in the joint reign of Hatshepsut and Thutmose III. By this time, Senenmut had become an important official, and he could provide a comparatively rich burial for his mother, including this canopic box.The box and lid are made of cypress which has been covered with a layer of linen and gesso, and painted white. Inside the two leaves of an inner lid pivot open to reveal four compartments that held the four canopic jars containing Hatnefer's internal organs (for a group of canopic jars from about the same period, see 12.181.253a-c).
