The historical migratory range of these Turkic nomads reaches from the southwest shores of the Caspian Sea to the southern part of Transcaucasia. Art historians have identified Shahsevan weavings, including a variety of small-format bags, only in the past half century. Many Shahsevan weavings from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, especially those with centralized geometric designs - such as seen here - show a striking relationship with Anatolian carpets from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Often compositions are dominated by an octagonal star-like central medallion. Many of the motifs found on Shahsevan textiles are thought to be centuries-old tribal emblems, a symbolic language that today we are frequently unable to decipher.. The stars are encircled by small abstract radiating trefoil ornaments resembling fleur-de-lys, cypresses, and rosettes. On the large border that frames the central compartments of this design, poly-lobed lozengelike medallions alternate with cartouches. Placing the woolen pile of a rya next to the body provides an extra layer of insulation that traps the sleeper's body heat, thus increasing its warming capabilities. The earliest ryas featured a relatively plain pile surface and moderately decorative ground fabric. By the end of the seventeenth century, however, the practical use of ryas began to diminish and their decorative possibilities took on increased importance. Elaborately patterned ryas became important as wall hangings and rugs and indicated the wealth and prestige of the owners.Prayer dress. Barred, so-called Kumarju-Kuma / Kümurçü-Kula. CopticShrub Carpet Fragment 17th century Composed of four individual pieces this fragment once belonged to the center field of a much larger carpet from Khurasan. Although fragmentary, one can identify the overall composition of the original carpet. The overall composition would have been dominated by a tall vertical symmetrical axis composed of a vase, blossoming radiant flowers, and stylized vegetal motifs, including lotuses and scrolling split palmettes, all against a deep blue ground. Textiles with this design are sometimes referred to as "shrub" carpets, after the floral bouquet, and belong to a group known as "vase" or "garden" carpets. The Met collection has only a few such weavings, which illustrate the importance of flowers and gardens in Persian art and culture.. Shrub Carpet Fragment. 17th century. Date: 1840-70.This object is from the collection of Natalia de Shabelsky (1841-1905), a Russian noblewoman compelled to preserve what she perceived as the vanishing folk art traditions of her native country. Traveling extensively throughout Great Russia, she collected many fine examples of textile art of the wealthy peasant class. From the 1870s until moving to France in 1902, Shabelsky amassed a large collection of intricately embroidered hand-woven household textiles and opulent festival garments with rich decoration and elaborate motifs. The Brooklyn Museum holdings include many fine examples including the majority of the garments. Portions of Shabelsky's collection are also housed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Cleveland Art Museum, and the Russian Museum of Ethnography in St. Petersburg.Kilim or split tapestry is a hand weaving technique most usually used to produce heavyweight rugs. These samplers are rarely signed or dated, and often include motifs that are only partially worked, leading to the conclusion that this type of sampler was made as a personal stitch reference for its maker, and not for display, as band samplers were signed by student embroiderers. The sampler features flowers, obelisks on pedestals, and an "S" motif, in addition to geometric designs that are of the type that would have been used to decorate small purses, cushions, and other accessories..
