Technological improvements to optical scientific instruments in the mid-nineteenth century spurred a veritable obsession across Europe with identifying and classifying the natural world. Amateur botanists were eager to collect and preserve floral specimens, which they intently researched and catalogued. In response to this broad appeal, French glassmakers made paperweights that portrayed the very botanical subjects that were so enthusiastically sought. Many weights represented specimens with horticultural correctness, but others were entirely fanciful creations. (1.9 x 18.6 x 18.6 cm), Carved black and red lacquer on wood core, China, 14th century, Keeping with late Song and Yuan taste for floral décor, this small tray or plate is deeply carved in the form of a blossoming lotus with a clearly defined seed pod in the center. While the outer layer is entirely black, an inner layer of red has been exposed to give clear definition to the blossom. One of the most common Buddhist symbols, the lotus stands for spiritual purity, and a small tray such as this may have been used in Buddhist rituals perhaps as an offering vessel for the altar table. Beautifully executed, this unusual design is an excellent interpretation of a natural form.Tablecloth, Medium: cotton, cotton and viscose rayon embroidery Technique: embroidered on plain weave., Round olive green tablecloth embroidered in a design stylized squarish flowers of blue, orange and yellow arranged in a circle.
