This scene is one of several designs that the English sculptor and draughtsman John Flaxman (1755-1826) did to illustrate passages from the Greek epic poet Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, a commission he had been given by Georgiana Hare-Naylor while he was living in Rome. Shown here in this late 1800s illustration is Theseus lifting stone under which his father's sword and shoes were hidden. The Athenian hero was the son of the Greek king Aegeus. Aegeus left Theseus with his mother before the child was born. He left a sword and a pair of shoes in a hollow under a stone. Aegeus said that if Theseus, when he was old and strong enough, could roll the stone away, then he could travel to Athens to claim himself as the son of the king. Theseus, at a young age, accomplished this feat (shown here) and his mother told him what to do.

Iphigenia was the daughter of Agamemnon, leader of the Greek forces against the Troy in the Trojan War. To appease the goddess Artemis (the Roman Diana), Agamemnon was told to sacrifice Iphigenia, seen in this illustration at Aulis, the port town in eastern Greece, where Agamemnon's fleet was prevented by Artemis from sailing until he had sacrificed her. When the sacrifice was about to take place, Iphigenia was whisked away to Taurus and an animal sent in her place.

Design for a Frieze with Two Women Flanking an Urn ca. 1775-85 attributed to Giuseppe Cades Italian The highly sculptural features of this design are characteristic for some of the drawings by the artist Giuseppe Cades. Active as a painter and sculptor in Italy during the second half of the 18th century, his designs channel both the influence of the Antique and the Renaissance periods. Although this particular design for a frieze has a very monumental quality to it, its intended purpose is unknown. The fact that Cades introduces two variants for the decoration of the side panels indicates that he was still trying out different ideas. The panel on the right with the hybrid female figure in the almond-shaped frame is repeated in a related drawing kept in the Musée Vivenel (Compiègne, France). Jesus drives the merchants from the Temple, among them moneychangers as well as those who sell animals for sacrifice and food for worshippers. He scatters their goodsin a dramatic flurry of flapping doves’ wingsas he wields a whip devised from his own belt, Tissot notes in his text. (This last detail comes from the account in John, though Tissot chose not to cite those verses in his Bible.) The sheer bulk of merchants with their wares and animals had grown so large, Tissot explains, that, for want of room, they had invaded Solomon’s Porch and the Court of the Gentiles, rendering the cisterns impure and the silence required for prayer impossible.
