Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.

According to Greek mythology and legend, Telemachus was the son of Penelope and Odysseus, a Trojan War hero whose return trip home took 10 years. In the epic, Odyssey, by the Greek poet Homer, Telemachus asked the gods to him find his father. In this 1907 illustration, Odysseus makes himself known to his son after he finally returned home - but he keeps his presence a secret until he rids his palace of the suitors trying to win his wife's hand in marriage.

According to Greek legend, Rhampsinites (also spelled Rhampsinutus) was a king of Egypt. He so loved wealth and riches that he had his mason build a room with no openings to houses his treasurespictured here in this 1915 illustration by American artist Evelyn Paul. When the mason was dying, he told his sons of a mark he left that would give them access to the treasures. They gained access and gradually took what they wanted. The king tried to catch them and finally, after one brother died getting the treasures, the king thought the robber was so clever he would give him his daughter in marriage - if he confessed. the surviving brother did and was given the princess.
