Fallen Warriors and a Runaway Horse 1862 Eugène Delacroix French This late drawing of fallen warriors and a runaway horse shows how the fluidity of pen and ink enabled swift execution that could keep pace with Delacroixs free-flowing "premières pensées" (first thoughts). The artist was generating ideas for two battle scenes when he made this drawing: "Botzaris Attacks the Turkish Camp" (1860−62; Toledo Museum of Art) and "Arabs Skirmishing in the Mountains" (1863; National Gallery of Art, Washington). Although the fleeing horse is the only moving subject in the foreground, the animated quality of line lends the sprawled figures a sense of vitality.. Fallen Warriors and a Runaway Horse 336523

Battle Scene with a Prisoner Being Bound, after Raphael ca. 1823 Eugène Delacroix French As a copyist, Delacroix looked repeatedly to the art of Italian Renaissance master Raphael, suggesting an enduring appreciation for elements of classicism. Here, Delacroix carefully copied an etching that reverses a pen-and-ink drawing by Raphael (ca. 1506-7; Ashmolean Museum). Although executed on tracing paper, it is not a direct tracing; this copy is smaller than the print. Nevertheless, Delacroix meticulously replicated the lines of the etching in graphite in order to study the dynamic organization of bodies in the composition.. Jacques Louis David French As a student at the French Academy, David filled sketchbooks with drawings after antique as well as Baroque art, including this sketch of figures from Pietro da Cortona's fresco, The Assumption of the Virgin, in the apse of the Church of Santa Maria in Vallicella in Rome.
