Author: Robert Stewart.Side Chair 1815-20 Attributed to John Finlay This brilliantly conceived and handsomely executed chair derives its broad, deeply curved crest tablet from the ancient Greek klismos form, and its turned front legs from Roman prototypes. During the James Madison administration (1809-17), the architect Benjamin Latrobe designed a suite of painted furniture for the White House in the latest Grecian style. Although the suite was destroyed in a fire in 1814, drawings for it bearing Latrobes instructions to the Baltimore fancy chair makers John and Hugh Finlay still exist and provide the basis for this chair's attribution. Originally part of a larger set, this chair was once used by Arunah S. Abell, founder of the "Baltimore Sun," in his country house "Wood bourne." The Metropolitan owns four chairs (65.167.5, .6, .8, .9) from the set. Others are in the collections of the High Museum, Atlanta; the Baltimore Museum of Art; and the Munson Williams Proctor Institute, Utica, New York.. While they varied considerably in some elements of their design, they were generally configured to shield the sitter from drafts. Their high backs were either covered in leather or paneled, and protection below the seat was provided by extending the back down to the feet, as in this example. The leather on the back of this example is original, while the seat upholstery is an old replacement. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.Voltaire armchair with black boulle maqueterie. The curule form, or ogee-crossed stretcher base, plays on a Classical folding stool (sella curulis) often used by Roman magistrates which was popularly adapted by nineteenth-century French and English designers. Designs for taborets with curule bases appear in well-known publications from the period like Pierre de La Mésangère's Collection de Meubles et Objets de Goût (1820-1831) and the London fashion journal, Ackermans Repository of Arts. This taboret is part of an expansive suite of seating furniture attributed to the workshop of cabinetmaker Duncan Phyfe (see 66.221.1-.10 and 1972.264.1-.2). Seeking a new source for aesthetic inspiration, Hunzinger frequently looked to the great invention of that era the machine. This settee, with its interlocking, contiguous, and rhythmically repeated elements, conveys energy, implies movement, and resembles the very machines that produced it. One of only two Hunzinger settees of this kind and one of the few finished in black, this piece was part of a suite of furniture that included two armchairs, four side chairs, and a table. A pioneer in the use of interchangeable parts, Hunzinger drew directly from his design for the settee to create the armchairs and side chairs.
