(14 × 30.8 cm), Brandywine bowls (brandewijnkommen) were used in Dutch households for serving a mixture of brandy and raisins at ceremonial occasions such as weddings and births. The lobed panels and cast handles with caryatids on this impressively-scaled bowlderive from Netherlandish examples and show the survival of Dutch artistic traditions in the New York area. It was made by the Huguenot silversmith Bartholomew Le Roux, who arrived in New York from London by 1690 and quickly established himself as one of the colony’s leading silversmiths. The bowl features the initials of Joseph and Sarah Wardel, who were married in 1696 in Shrewsbury, New Jersey. The bowl was likely made to commemorate their wedding. Later inscriptions chart its descentthrough the female line ofthe Wardel family into the early twentieth century. , Made in New York, New York, American, 17thcentury, CAllegory of Trade ca. 1730 Bohemian. This punch bowl is among the most flamboyant works appearing in the company's line, likely produced as a showpiece or for a special commission. The vessel is surrounded by intertwining tendrils, but its Germanic accents, the angular handles, the green faceted glass and its assertive presence distinguish it from the softer embellishments familiar to French Art Nouveau.Vijzel with inscription: Devs Spes Mea 1565, Thomas Both (Attributed to), 1565 The cast round mortar extends upwards, has a profiled foot and has two rectangular ears. Communion cup (one of a pair) 238311Creamer ca. 1800 Attributed to Christian Wiltberger American This handsome tea and coffee service (1980.503.1--.4), although unmarked, has been attributed to the Philadelphia silversmith Christian Wiltberger on the basis of style. Stately and dignified, with its fluted forms and generous proportions, it represents the fully matured Neoclassical style. The service belonged to Eleanor Parke (Nelly) Custis (1779-1852), granddaughter of Martha Washington, who married George Washington's nephew Lawrence Lewis (1767-1839) on February 22, 1799. Family tradition holds that the service was a gift from General Lafayette and his son, who were close friends of the family. In addition to the matching bands of bright-cut ornament, each piece is engraved with the Lewis crest and with the script monogram "LEPL" for Lawrence and Eleanor Parke Lewis. In place of the customary urn or flame-shaped finial, cast eagles surmount three of the pieces, especially appropriate for America's first family..
