Length 18th century French This French dress silk is a complex combination of textures and colors: silver and gold streamers and floral garlands meander across a background that features a brilliant green pattern of a small flowering vine. The textile employs six different metal-wrapped threads, plus twelve colors of silk. The layering of side-by-side streamers with floral sprays and garlands is typical of the 1760s, and the formula was used repeatedly with variations depicting ribbon, lace, or fur. Velvetlike chenille thread was sometimes used instead of metal thread.When made up into a woman's robe, the textile would have been further embellished with coordinating trim at the front opening of the gown and lace at the neck and sleeves. Running straight model, without seam. The overlay belongs to a lace bridal dress. The pattern increases in density from top to bottom. At the top of the skirt you can see a spreading pattern of flower branches and short flower garlands. A zigzag line runs under the spreading pattern, with similar flowers from the spreading pattern. Under the zigzag line a wavy, double ribbon. On every wave top the ribbon forms a bow, on which a large field bouquet hangs. The field bouquets are interspersed by standing field bouquets, which spring from the wave tops of the flower ring along the bottom edge of the skirt. The color was often chosen to complement the suit and covered in imaginative embroideries, heavily woven patterns or shiny satins made to draw the eye. The style of the neck, the length and the hem treatment fluctuated as the tastes changed from over-sized coats of the early 18th century to narrow tightly fitted coats of the late 18th century and onward.This rare flat textile documents the manner in which valuable men's embroidered waistcoats were produced. The embroidery was worked on the textile in the shape of the right front, left chest, left pocket and buttons, before the fabric was cut and fashioned into a garment. Stomacher ca. 1720 British This is a beautifully preserved example of an early stomacher with all the hallmarks of exquisite early English floral embroidery. The stomacher was worn as a central bodice piece with open robes of the 18th century.
