Pair of Sleeve Ruffles Made 1725-1775 France. The lace decorations that ornamented womenís dresses were separate from the dresses themselves. They required many yards of lace and, since fine lace was expensive, people sought substitutes that mimicked the light, translucent nature of the fabric. Here, the sleeve ruffles are made of a woven linen that has been skillfully embroidered to look like lace.. Linen plain weave foundation; embroidered in linen with shadow, chain, and buttonhole stitches, and drawnwork with various fillings . Unknown

Collar of clusters inspired by lying 17th century collars and associated engagement photo (copy) from Bram Pleting and Jet Faber who made the collar and wore during her engagement. Collar of linen with an edge natural colosside. Trapezoidal model, with U-shaped neck opening. The repeating pattern consists of semi-relief slopes, with a quadruped rosette of eight spic oval leaves in the center, made in shape stroke. The rosette stands in the center of a braided wheel with eight points that form a star. The shelters are finished with picoted point braids. The four corner shellars, two rear and two of the front, are egg-shaped. The whole is inspired by a type of lying collar, which was popular in the 17th century. The collater of the collar, Johanna Henriëtte Faber (Jet), followed Louise van der Meulen-Nulle as a lace teacher at the Rijkschool for arts and crafts in 1916. In the same year, the collar contributes to her engagement with Abraham (Bram). The collar can be seen on the photo, ma

Feathered Tabard. Culture: Ica (). Dimensions: H. 30 × W. 25 in. (76.2 × 63.5 cm). Date: 15th-early 17th century.Feathers were considered luxury materials in ancient Peru. They were used to embellish elite costume for thousands of years. Textiles densely covered with the brilliantly colored feathers of tropical rainforest birds are among the most spectacular works produced by ancient Andean artists. Feathered garments lent the wearer status and prestige and indicated wealth. Far-reaching contacts were necessary to bring the Amazonian bird feathers over the long distances between the eastern slopes of the Andes to the desert reaches of the Pacific coast, where this tunic was made. Feathers also referred to the birds' ability to fly. In Andean thought, they may have imbued the wearer with increased spiritual power, enabling communication with other realms. The sleeveless tunic has an opening for the head at the neck and is open at the sides with ties.
