The caption for this illustration reads: Marra takes off her golden dress. Marra is the Cinderella of Serbian myth. Her mother who had been changed into a cow protected her from her stepmother. The golden silk dress is from her mother and she would take it off each time she returned from church on Sunday. Marra is also referred to as Pepelyouga. The illustration is from a 1921 book on Serbian myths and legends.

Marie Fargues, the Painters Wife. Liotard was already 54 when he married the 29-yearold Marie Fargues in Amsterdam in 1756. This extraordinary portrait - it is one of Liotards largest pastels and necessitated the use of two pieces of vellum - was probably done shortly following their wedding. Liotard chose a composition he had first used in a drawing made in Constantinople and had repeated several times in different contexts: it was, indeed, one of the most famous inventions of his persona as ‘Le peintre turc.

Breitner was one of several European artists in the late 19th century who was intrigued by the East, Orientalism, or in this case, 'Japanism'. Breitner painted several canvases of girls in kimonos. The model appears relaxed but seductive. The studio is furnished with Eastern rugs and, behind the bed, a traditional Japanese screen.

Salomé with the head of Johannes de Boper, Jan Adam Kruseman, c. 1861 painting Salomé is the daughter of Herodias and Herod Filippus. Her mother wanted to remarry Herod Antipas. The preacher John the Baptist had convicted this marriage and was imprisoned for this. On his birthday, Herod promised to give Antipas to Salomé what she wanted if she danced for him. Her mother Herodias encouraged her to ask John the Baptist on a dish. Against his will, Herod kept his promise. After the dance, the severed head was brought in on a dish. New Testament, Matthew 14: 6-11; Marcus 6: 14-29. Salomé has been presented here as an Eastern princess. She looks away from the dish in her hands, which she will give to her mother. The head of John the Baptist lies in a puddle of blood on the dish and is covered with a white cloth, which clearly shows the contours of his face.
