A Garden Idyll Edward Gurden Dalziel (1849-1888 British)The Wyndham Sisters: Lady Elcho, Mrs. Adeane, and Mrs. Tennant. Artist: John Singer Sargent (American, Florence 1856-1925 London). Dimensions: 115 x 84 1/8 in. (292.1 x 213.7 cm). Date: 1899.The three daughters of the Honorable Percy Wyndham, a wealthy Londoner, appear in this monumental canvas. From the left, they are Madeline Adeane (1869-1941), Pamela Tennant (1871-1928), and Mary Constance, Lady Elcho (1862-1937). Sargent painted them in the drawing room of their family's residence on Belgrave Square. Seen on the wall above them is George Frederic Watts's portrait of their mother (private collection), which establishes their genealogy and reminds viewers of Sargent's ties to older artists. Displayed in 1900 at the Royal Academy, The Wyndham Sisters was hailed by the critics and dubbed "The Three Graces" by the Prince of Wales. Date: 1876.In their subject matter and compositional format, Perry's watercolor paintings are quite similar to his oils, and his method of applying paint was consistently characterized by fastidious attention to detail. Like his colleague Eastman Johnson, Perry studied in Düsseldorf and Paris, where he acquired a respect for careful draftsmanship. He exhibited "A Month's Darning" in 1876 at the American Society of Painters in Water Colors and later the same year at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, where it was acclaimed for its evocation of times past. The critic for the "New-York Tribune" found the woman's head to be "the best part" of the composition and only regretted "that the sweet-faced girl . should have such large-footed men-folks to darn for.". Oil on panel, 21 7/8 x 17 15/16 in. (55.6 x 45.6 cm). This painting portrays a young woman dressed in garments that seem at once rustic and classical, cradling a small child. The title identifies the figures as siblings, but their tender, entwined poses intentionally recall Renaissance paintings of the Madonna and Child. Such sentimentalized paintings appealed to a bourgeois clientele that appreciated delicately rendered Christian and humble domestic themes. Many people who bought art for their homes in the nineteenth century preferred paintings such as William Bouguereaus to those that displayed more radical approaches to brushwork and form. This was partly because their tastes were shaped by the burgeoning upper-middle-class merchant economy, which valued works that appeared fastidiously made over those that looked slapdash. Artist: Frederick William MacMonnies (American, New York 1863-1937 New York). Dimensions: 45 3/4 x 45 3/8 in. (115.1 x 114.7 cm). Date: 1901.MacMonnies created this autumnal-themed work during the four-year period (1900-1904) when he redirected his attention from sculpture to painting. Reimagining the Virgin and Child in a French grape arbor, he posed his son Ronald as the Christ Child. The models for the angels were the artist's daughters, as well as two children of the gardener of his Giverny neighbor, Claude Monet. The circular format, called a tondo, and the naturalistic setting reflect the influence of Italian Renaissance artist Raphael, whose paintings of the Madonna MacMonnies copied in Munich's Alte Pinakothek.
