The interior of this basin, glazed in a technique called aborronado, features a woman in contemporary dress surrounded by birds and a dense pattern of dotted foliate decoration. Date: 1670s.This dish is part of a group of polychrome ceramics which were produced in Kirman, Iran. The fortunes of this city in southeastern Iran rose under Shah 'Abbas I (r.1587-1629) when a number of major monuments were commissioned. To decorate the new buildings and cater to the needs of new patrons, many artisans, including skilled potters, moved to Kirman.During the seventeenth century a new style of Kirman ceramics arose based on Chinese motifs. The dish size and shape, however, were distinctly Iranian. The large size of the dish, while not unusual for Kirman wares, calls attention to the purpose for which it was made. These dishes would have been used for serving foodstuffs such as pilau from which diners would scoop portions with long-handled spoons -- quite unlike Chinese food, which was eaten from small bowls. Although in reality they may not have known one another personally, they are said to have gathered in a bamboo grove near the house of the groups leader, Ji Kang (ca. 223-ca. 262), to enjoy wine, music, and metaphysical discourse. Delft .Dish with stenciled decoration ca. 1745 Doccia Porcelain Manufactory Italian The Carlo Ginori factory, founded at Doccia outside of Florence in 1737, developed a notably wide repertoire of decorative techniques for its wares. Unusually, many of these techniques not only were distinct from one another but were in use more or less simultaneously, which speaks to the factorys artistic ambitions. A number of these styles practiced at Doccia were unique to the factory, and the most extraordinary involved the use of stencils by which the decoration was applied. This technique became known as a stampino, though the term was not used in the eighteenth century,[1 and the stenciled designs were always executed in cobalt blue, as seen on this dish. Due to the high-firing temperature of cobalt oxide, it could be applied to the biscuit porcelain (fired but not glazed) and then fired at the same time as the transparent lead glaze that covered it, which reduced the total number of firings per objec.
