The Blacksmith Chooses Ye Raven and Runs Away With It, for "The Wonder Clock" 1887 Howard Pyle American Pyle is considered the father of American illustration. Born in Wilmington, Delaware, he became interested in art and writing as a boy, studied in Philadelphia and then New York, at the Art Students League. In 1878, a drawing accepted by Harper's Weekly helped to launch his career and the artist returned to Delaware in 1880. Over the next three decades Pyle wrote and illustrated a series of now iconic works and became an influential teacher. Aware of contemporary European innovations, he skillfully adapted his style to suit a range of subjects. This design first appeared in Harper's "Young People," May 17, 1886 titled "He Snatched it and Ran." Here, the artist redrew it for "The Wonder Clock," a book published by Harper Brothers in 1888. The related image appears in story XXIV on page 311.. The Blacksmith Chooses Ye Raven and Runs Away With It, for "The Wonder Clock". Howard Pyle (Am

Gathering Olives at Tivoli 1868 François-Louis Français French Français began his career as an illustrator. He and a group of fellow graphic artists, including Célestin Nanteuil (1813-1873), published a popular series of lithographs reproducing masterpieces of painting. The first paintings that he exhibited were collaborative efforts done with Henri Baron (1816-1885) who, like Français, had studied with Jean Gigoux (1806-1894) and earned a reputation as a fine watercolorist. The most decisive influences on Français were his friendship with Corot, whom he met in 1837, and a three-year stay in Italy, from about 1846 until 1850. Both influences are evident in Gathering Olives at Tivoli. This painting and its pendant, Ruins in Italy at Sunset (location unknown), were decorative panels painted for a Parisian patron, Paul Lagarde.. Gathering Olives at Tivoli 436329

Leaf from a Dispersed Bhagavata Purana Series Indian. Leaf from a Dispersed Bhagavata Purana Series, 1760-1765. Opaque watercolors and gold on paper, Sheet): 11 7/8 x 15 7/8 in. (30.2 x 40.3 cm). The artist Manaku introduced new methods of representing landscape elements and spatial depth to the conservative pictorial traditions of the Punjab Hills. Here, he uses a curved hillside rather than the traditional flat horizon line and disperses overlapping figures on a slope to add to the sense of dimensionality. The blue-skinned figure on the right is Krishna, an avatar (or incarnation) of the Hindu god Vishnu. He is about to rescue his childhood companions, who have fallen ill from drinking the water of a poisoned river. Asian Art 1760-1765

Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.

Foundering James Hamilton (American, 1819-1878). Foundering, 1863. Oil on canvas, 59 5/8 x 48 1/16 in. (151.5 x 122 cm). As in his painting The Last Days of Pompeii, on view nearby, here James Hamilton depicts human frailty in the face of natures awesome force. Under dramatic skies a foundering ship is tossed on stormy waves. A Confederate flag whips from the top of the mast (upside down to signal distress), making the image emblematic of the ongoing devastation of the U.S. Civil War and predictive of the Souths defeat.
