George Washington Quilt. Culture: American. Dimensions: 89 1/2 x 79 1/2 in. (227.3 x 201.9 cm). Date: about 1876.The front and back of this whole-cloth quilt are constructed of two complete width and one cut-width lengths of fabric seamed at their selvedges. The front is a multicolored roller-printed cotton showing medallions with trompe-l'oeil relief busts of George Washington. Each medallion is topped with an eagle and surrounded with a wreath of flowers. The back is of a dark brown calico with a lozenge design in brown and red. The piece is fan quilted overall. Mohnköpfe (Poppyheads) (Dress or Furnishing Fabric) Made 1900 Vienna. Koloman Moser, a prominent Viennese designer, cofounded the Wiener Werkstatte (1903ñ32), a forward-looking Viennese design workshop. Prior to 1903 he was an influential member of the Moderne Movement in Vienna. Moser was also a founder of the Vienna Secession, the association of young artists who had broken away from the Wiener K¸nstlerhaus, the accepted artistic forum of the time. Poppyheads, designed by Moser three years before the Wiener Werksttte was formed, foreshadowed the kind of elegant textile designs he would produce at the Werksttte. The attenuated lines coupled with the simplification and abstraction of organic forms demonstrate a new aesthetic vision of the time shared by artists and designers in Vienna and Glasgow. Moserís design was produced in various colors by the Viennese firm of Johann Backhausen und Sˆhne, which was closely linked to the Werksttte and is still in business today. The textile was
