Date: 1784.Mary Austin attended one of the many schools that flourished in Salem in the late eighteenth century. At one time, all samplers stitched with long stitches in unraveled silk thread were considered the work of girls who had studied at Mrs. Sarah Stivour's School (1778-88), since that was the only Salem school ever named in samplers. Recent research, however, has proven that the affluent families of Salem supported many schools that helped teach their daughters the arts of refinement. Rudolf I (1218-1291), also known as Rudolf of Habsburg, was the son of Count Albert IV of Habsburg, and became count after his father's death in 1239. His godfather was Emperor Frederick II, to whom he paid frequent court visits. Rudolf ended the Great Interregnum that had engulfed the Holy Roman Empire after the death of Frederick when he was elected as King of Germany in 1273.

Relief Fragments Depicting a Seated Woman and a Griffin 1 CE-100 CE Italy. Inside some Roman houses, baths, and tombs, multiple layers of slow-drying stucco were applied to rough stone walls and divided into panels that were then painted. While the surface was still damp, fresh stucco was applied and modeled into decorative motifs and figures, which were left white to contrast with the painted background. This relief panel and its partner (1922.4429) likely came from the same building. Fragment of a Tapestry or Wall Hanging Upper Rhenish ca. 1420-30 This tapestry fragment represents a fabulous lionlike beast with pointed teeth, clawed feet, and a scaly rump. Such beasts, derived from those illustrated in classical texts like the Physiologus and medieval bestiaries, represent vices. This illustration dates to 1897. It shows the Greek Trojan War hero Odysseus being tempted by the Sirens. It is based on the design on an ancient Greek vase in the British Museum. When Odysseus passed the Sirens, he had himself bound to the mast and his men's ears blocked to avoid being tempted by their alluring songs and calls.

Siyah Kalem or 'Black Pen' is the name given to the 15th century school of painting attributed to Mehmed Siyah Kalem. Nothing is known of his life, but his work indicates that he was of Central Asian Turkic origin, and thoroughly familiar with camp and military life. The paintings appear in the 'Conquerors Albums', so named because two portraits of Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror are present in one of them. The albums are made up of miniatures taken from manuscripts of the 14th, 15th, and early 16th centuries, and one series of paintings is inscribed 'work of Master Muḥammad Siyah Kalem'. Something of the style and techniques of Chinese paintings is apparent in these, and an acquaintance with Buddhist art, particularly in the depictions of grotesque demonic figures. It seems likely that certain paintings contained in the 'Conqueror's Albums' are of Chinese origin and may have been used as stylistic guides for painters in the Siyah Kalem tradition.
