Shown are the right side of the upper part the moldings framing the opening nearly entirely. A pedestal in the general shape of a pediment stands upon the shelf. It contains laterally spherical quadrangles, in the center are ovoidal looking glasses. On top stands a vase with flowers upon a bracket. The background is shaped like an angular niche with festoons hanging from the upper corners to the vase. Two flanking door cases are indicated. Date: 1750-1775. Interior of a Mausoleum. A specialist in architectural drawing and perspective, Challe was also a prolific inventor of theatre and festive decors and imaginary architecture. He based this drawing on the Pantheon in Rome, giving it an exuberant Baroque twist with numerous decorations. He achieved the dramatic chiaroscuro in the foreground by using undiluted brown ink.

Design for Three Armchairs with Pictorial Upholstery ca. 1830-40 Anonymous, British, 19th century British The firm Gillows was established in Lancaster by Robert Gillow (British, Singleton 1704-1772) in 1730. The firm also opened a shop in London which was turned into a permanent branch in the 1760s. Gillows of Lancaster and London produced furniture for the higher classes of society in Britain and the colonies overseas. The firm had a remarkably long and mostly prosperous history which is documented richly in the Gillow archives in London. The archive also contains many sketches and finished designs for their furniture. A group of approximately 250 presentation drawings dating to the first half of the 19th century were acquired by the Metropolitan Museum in 1938 however. They show the range of designs produced by the firm, from chairs and sofas to dressing tables and hat and umbrella stands, as well as whole room arrangements and draperies. A Four Posted Bed. With high dome and canopy, draperies coming through the cornices. Similar to a state bed built for the Marquis of Winchester. Beside the mensa are panels of the dado. The panel between the support bears a monogram framed by two crossed branches. The altar furniture is decorated at the front with festoons. Above it stand beside a crucifix, at left a candle and a figure; at right two candles and a figure. The figures stand in front of pilaster strips framing the central panel with a frame for a picture, and a glory as background. Above the panels of the dado is a high panel with a, probably carved, candelabrum with a burning fire, and a lower one. The vaulted ceiling has three panels, the central one with two sitting angels beside a circular frame. Colored framing background. Pen and brown ink, brush and brown wash on off-white laid paper.
