NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter observed a small portion of a dark crater floor in the Tyrrhena Terra region of Mars. This is largely ancient hard bedrock that has been cratered by numerous impacts over the eons.

HiRISE reveals small-scale shapes that often correlate with mineral units and provides information about stratigraphy (i.e., what's on top and relative ages). This image was acquired for co-analysis with a spectrometer instrument also on our spacecraft called CRISM (Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars). It shows polygonal units that match clay-rich areas. Plus, this region is colorful! This location, in Eridania Basin, was the site of an ancient lake, so these clay-rich sediments may have been habitable. While CRISM cannot acquire new data from their infrared channel due to lack of cooling, they have acquired much previous data that lacks HiRISE coverage.

Araneiform terrain (colloquially spider-like terrain) is located in the south polar region of Mars and evolves in appearance over the spring and summer. In the season shown here, the thin bright lines on the surface (the spider legs) are troughs and many of these features have dark fan-shaped markings emanating from them. Our current theory for how these patterns are formed is that during winter a carbon dioxide ice layer develops over the surface. When sun rays strike this surface, this carbon dioxide ice acts in a similar way to our atmosphere it allows the sun light to penetrate but traps the infrared radiation creating a greenhouse-like effect. The trapped heat transforms the ice at the bottom of the layer to gas, building up pressure until it bursts through. When that happens, the gas flows out in geyser-like fashion and carries dust with it, which falls back to the surface to form the dark fans.

At 11:31 a.m. (EST) when this picture was made the Apollo 9 spacecraft was at an altitude of 117 nautical miles, and the sun elevation was 38 degrees above the horizon. The location of the point on the surface of Earth at which the four-camera combination was aimed was 33 degrees 41 minutes north latitude, and 101 degrees 29 minutes west longitude. The other three cameras used: (B) black and white film with a red filter; (C) black and white infrared film; and (D) black and white film with a green filter.

This is a false-color, three-frequency image of the Oberpfaffenhofen supersite, southwest of Munich in southern Germany, which shows the differences in what the three radar bands can see on the ground.

By-the-wind sailor (Velella velella) stranded by the millions after a storm in Corsica. The velella (Velella velella) is a pelagic species of cnidarian (hydrozoan). Contrary to appearances, it is not a jellyfish. It is more closely related to the siphonophores, a colony of specialized polyps formed from a single initial polyp, of the class Hydrozoa. It belongs to the neuston, a category of surface-bound aquatic organisms.

Ammonites were ancient chambered mollusks, like the nautilus, and grew to large sizes.

In northern California, east of Mt. Shasta, the footprints of clear-cut logging activities are evident in this ASTER image. Newer logged-out parcels are brighter blue-green. Where secondary growth has started, the logged tracts appear fuzzy. Note that some of the logged-out tracts are located within the Shasta National Forest. The image was acquired July 2, 2018, covers an area of 37 by 56.5 kilometers, and is located at 42.5 degrees north, 122 degrees west.
