Hanuman before Rama and Lakshmana: Folio from the dispersed Mankot" Ramayana series ca. 1710-25 India, Punjab Hills, kingdom of Mankot When Hanuman, as the messenger of Sugriva, first encounters Rama and Lakshmana, he assumes the form and aspect of a sage. After much discussion a pact of friendship is decided upon and Hanuman returns to his natural monkey form. This moment was chosen, as Hanuman's disguise would have confused the viewer; moreover this portrayal allowed the artist to emphasize his role as a general of the great monkey army. The Mankot Ramayana series (see also Lakshmana and Sugriva Being Carried by Palanquin to Receive Rama's Blessings) focuses on Rama's exile in the forest; the heroes are depicted in the attire of forest dwellers—leaf shirts and hats—and the landscape is rendered in green. Krishna Rajagopalaswamy, king of the cowherds Tirupati School, South India late 18th century This diminutive painting celebrates Krishna as king of the cowherdsa form of the divinity unique to the Rajagopalaswamy temple in Mannargudi in Tamil Nadu. It is a work of tender devotion, immediate in its celebration of Krishna as the pastoral protector of cows. Painted in a seemingly folkish style that belies its sophistication, this powerful image was likely painted in Tirupati, the great Vaishnava temple and pilgrimage center in southern Andhra Pradesh as part of a series celebrating the childhood and youth of Krishna. Wearing the distinctive turban of a cowherd and leaning nonchalantly on a crutch, he grasps a punch-dagger in his left hand; in his right he holds a lotus and a herdsmans whip. This stylized serpentine device with a snake terminal here assumes the status of a royal scepter. A bow is slung over his left shoulder; a quiver is visible behind the other. Construction of the Shwezigon Pagoda began during the reign of King Anawratha (r. 1044 -1077) and was completed during the reign of King Kyanzittha, in 1102. Bagan, formerly Pagan, was mainly built between the 11th century and 13th century. Formally titled Arimaddanapura or Arimaddana (the City of the Enemy Crusher) and also known as Tambadipa (the Land of Copper) or Tassadessa (the Parched Land), it was the capital of several ancient kingdoms in Burma.

Initiation Card (Tsakalis): Mahakala early 15th century Tibet Tsakali cards were used by itinerant teachers moving from one monastery to another in order to evoke Vajrayana Buddhist deities. When laid on the ground in the form of a mandala, as seen here, they functioned to create a fixed sacred space like that of a temple. The deities shown on these initiation cards include the Tathagata Buddhas, various bodhisattvas, fierce protectors, and the six possible realms of rebirth seen across the bottom. They probably were made by a Nepali artist for a Tibetan patron of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism.Tsakali cards were used individually to align a disciple with a deity from the vast pantheon. First, the disciple sought permission from the deity, either through a dream or under the guidance of a teacher. The associated ritual involved visualizing the deity as described in recited mantras (incantations) and with an imagein this case, the deity represented on the tsakali.The cards form

Date: ca. 1800.This devotional image of Hanuman celebrates his most famous heroic feat--carrying the Himalayan Mount Vindaya to Rama and Laskmana, who, gravely wounded in combat, were in desperate need of the medicinal herbs that grow on its upper slopes (compare Hanuman Revives Rama and Lakshmana with Medicinal Herbs). Unsure which plants to gather, Hanuman breaks off the entire peak and carries it through the sky back to Rama. On his shoulder is a diminutive image of his Lord. Hanuman's mighty tail carries his army, which encircles the monkey general and Rama, emblematic of the strategic importance of Hanuman's alliance to Rama's victory against Ravana on Lanka. The Ramayana is a story as old as time and - at least in the Indian subcontinent and across much of Southeast Asia - of unparalleled popularity. More than two thousand three hundred years ago the scholar-poet Valmiki sat down to write his definitive epic of love and war. The poem Valmiki composed is styled the Ramayana, or 'Romance of Rama' in Sanskrit. In its present form, the Sanskrit version consists of some 24,000 couplets divided into seven books. The Ramakien is the Thai version of this epic and has an important influence on Thai literature, art and drama. It is regarded as the National Epic of Thailand. Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha); full official name Wat Phra Si Rattana Satsadaram is regarded as the most sacred Buddhist temple in Thailand. It is located within the precincts of the Grand Palace. The Grand Palace served as the official residence of the Kings of Thailand from the 18th century onwards. Narasimha (incarnation of Vishnu as a man-lion); Vishnu avatars. Vishnu in the form of the man-lion (Narasimha) comes from a pillar of the palace up and outside to beat the demon Hiranyakashipu. To the right of him is a young man, the prince prahlada. The show is framed by a narrow white piping, around it a wide orange-red decorative edge with black frame lines; This leaf has been recorded on a sheet of carduffler on which a black frame line is drawn in pencil.

The Naxi or Nakhi are an ethnic group inhabiting the foothills of the Himalayas in the northwestern part of Yunnan Province, as well as the southwestern part of Sichuan Province in China. The Naxi are thought to have come originally from Tibet and, until recently, maintained overland trading links with Lhasa and India. The Naxi form one of the 56 ethnic groups officially recognized by the People's Republic of China. The Naxi are traditionally followers of the Dongba religion. Through both Han Chinese and Tibetan cultural influences, they adopted Tibetan Buddhism and, to a lesser extent, Taoism, in the 10th century.

The Goddess Durga, fighting Mahishasura, the buffalo-demon (Hindu Mythology). In the clouds the Devas or celestial beings are seen watching the event. The story is recorded in the Devi Mahatmya and the Devi Bhagavata and is the background for Durgapuja, the annual Hindu festival each autumn. In Hinduism, Durga is a form of Devi, the supremely radiant goddess, depicted as having eight arms, riding a lion or a tiger, carrying weapons and a lotus flower, maintaining a meditative smile, and practicing mudras, or symbolic hand gestures. An embodiment of creative feminine force (Shakti), Durga exists in a state of svatantrya (independence from the universe and anything/anybody else) and fierce compassion. Kali is considered by Hindus to be an aspect of Durga. She is thus considered the fiercer, demon-fighting form of Shiva's wife, goddess Parvati. Wayang is a Javanese word for particular kinds of theatre (literally 'shadow'). When the term is used to refer to kinds of puppet theatre, sometimes the puppet itself is referred to as wayang. Performances of shadow puppet theatre are accompanied by gamelan in Java. UNESCO designated Wayang Kulit, a shadow puppet theatre and the best known of the Indonesian wayang, as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity on 7 November 2003.
