Iniation Card (Tsakalis). Culture: Tibet. Dimensions: Each 6 1/4 x 5 3/4 in. (16 x 14.5 cm). Date: early 15th century.Tsakali cards were used by itinerant teachers moving from one monastery to another in order to evoke Vajrayana Buddhist deities. When laid on the ground in the form of a mandala, as seen here, they functioned to create a fixed sacred space like that of a temple. The deities shown on these initiation cards include the Tathagata Buddhas, various bodhisattvas, fierce protectors, and the six possible realms of rebirth seen across the bottom. They probably were made by a Nepali artist for a Tibetan patron of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism.Tsakali cards were used individually to align a disciple with a deity from the vast pantheon. First, the disciple sought permission from the deity, either through a dream or under the guidance of a teacher. The associated ritual involved visualizing the deity as described in recited mantras (incantations) and with an image--in thi

The Ramayana is a story as old as time and - at least in the Indian subcontinent and across much of Southeast Asia - of unparalleled popularity. More than two thousand three hundred years ago the scholar-poet Valmiki sat down to write his definitive epic of love and war. The poem Valmiki composed is styled the Ramayana, or 'Romance of Rama' in Sanskrit. In its present form, the Sanskrit version consists of some 24,000 couplets divided into seven books. The Ramakien is the Thai version of this epic and has an important influence on Thai literature, art and drama. It is regarded as the National Epic of Thailand. Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha); full official name Wat Phra Si Rattana Satsadaram is regarded as the most sacred Buddhist temple in Thailand. It is located within the precincts of the Grand Palace. The Grand Palace served as the official residence of the Kings of Thailand from the 18th century onwards. Construction of the Palace began in 1782, during the reign of Ki

Sri Nathaji, c. 1900. Northwestern India, Rajasthan, Rajput Kingdom of Kota. Gum tempera on paper; overall: 24.5 x 17.2 cm (9 5/8 x 6 3/4 in.). This painted depiction of the black stone sculpture regarded by followers of the Pushti Marg sect as Shri Nathji, a living embodiment of Krishna, includes all the elements carved into the monolithic stele behind the figure. Snakes, beasts, and yogis occupy a wild, rocky landscape. Priests have dressed the figure in light garments, indicative of a hot season, and applied a turban, jewelry, and eyes, which look down upon devotees who would be worshiping at his feet. This painting probably stood on a domestic shrine for daily devotions and served as a memento of a pilgrimage to Nathdwara.

Goddess Kamalatmika ca. 1880-85 Designed and published by The Hindu Art Studio The beautiful and benign goddess Kamalamika, the [red lotus lady,” is a tantric form of Lakshmi, Hinduism’s embodiment of all that is auspicious and abundant. As the goddess of wealth and prosperity, Lakshmi is most often depicted being lustrated by heavenly elephants where she is known as Gaja-Lakshmi. In her esoteric aspect as Kamalamika, she is enthroned on a red-lotus pedestal that rises from the silvered waters of a mountain lake, evoking her divine nature. Another flower bud serves as her footrest. In her four arms she displays lotus buds and a bloom and extends auspicious gestures to her devotees. In the heavenly skies above four white elephants hold golden pitchers (lota) in their extended trunks, allowing the waters to cascade upon the head of the goddess, empowering her with the life affirming waters that ensure abundance in all things. Ice-grey mountains rise majestically behind her, framing her

The Hindu deity Hanuman is an ardent devotee of Rama, a central character in the Indian epic Ramayana. A general among the vanaras, an ape-like race of forest-dwellers, Hanuman is an incarnation of the divine and a disciple of Lord Sri Rama in the struggle against the demon king Ravana. The Ramayana is an ancient Sanskrit epic. It is ascribed to the Hindu sage Valmiki and forms an important part of the Hindu canon, considered to be based on historical events. The Ramayana depicts the duties of relationships, portraying ideal characters like the ideal servant, the ideal brother, the ideal wife and the ideal king. The Ramayana was already well known in Java by the end of the ninth century CE. The late 18th-century renaissance of literature at the central Javanese courts of Surakarta and Yogyakarta saw the rewriting of the Ramayana Kakawin in modern Javanese.

Shani is a deva and son of Surya and his wife Chhaya, hence also known as Chayyaputra. He is the elder brother of Yama, the Hindu god of death, who in some scriptures corresponds to the deliverance of justice. Surya's two sons Shani and Yama judge. Shani gives us the results of one's deeds through one's life through appropriate punishments and rewards; Yama grants the results of one's deeds after death. Pierre Sonnerat (1748-1814) was a French naturalist and explorer who made several voyages to Southeast Asia between 1769 and 1781. He published this two-volume account of his voyage of 1774-81 in 1782. Volume 1 deals exclusively with India, whose culture Sonnerat very much admired, and is especially noteworthy for its extended discussion of religion in India, Hinduism in particular. Volume 2 covers Sonnerat's travels to China, Burma, Madagascar, the Maldives, Mauritius, Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka), Indonesia, and the Philippines. Narasimha 1886 India, Maharashtra, Pune Narasimha, the man-lion avatar of Vishnu, draws the demon king Hiranyakashipu upon his lap and disembowels him with his claws. This demon king had secured special protective powers through his mastery of yogic austerities, which meant that he could not be killed during the day or night, inside or outside, by weapons, or by a god, demon, man or animal. King Hiranyakashipu had repeatedly tried to kill his own son Prahlada, an unwavering devotee of Vishnu, and to avenge this wrong, Vishnu descended in this ferocious form to slay him. Prahlada and his wife stand in witness, their hands raised together in veneration (anjali). The palace setting in which this miraculous event occurs is devised as a Victorian courtyard, with highly ornate scroll work bracketing the scene.. Narasimha. India, Maharashtra, Pune. 1886.
