The remaining sketches are landscapes and figure studies, some after classical sculpture.

View at Rome Richard Cooper II British, Scottish 1774-75 Born in Edinburgh, Cooper II trained as an engraver under his father, then studied in Paris with Jacques Philippe le Bas (1707-1783). He made these drawings during a visit to Italy in 1771-76 and, until recently, they were preserved in an album that descended in the family. Interestingly, each composition relates closely to a drawing in a sketchbook that Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-1797) used in Rome in 1774-75 (57.102.1(1-44)). These visual links suggest that the two artists sketched together and took it in turns to use an optical instrument. May Day Celebrations at Xeuilley. Artist: Jacques Callot (French, Nancy 1592-1635 Nancy). Dimensions: sheet: 7 x 13 1/16 in. (17.8 x 33.2 cm). Date: ca. 1624-25.Born in the Duchy of Lorraine, Callot spent his formative years at the Medici court in Florence where he recorded elaborate court pageants and festivals in an elegant Mannerist style. Following the death of Cosimo de'Medici in 1621, he returned to Nancy where he embarked upon a successful career as a printmaker, treating a wide range of subjects from the court to the countryside, from military battles to biblical scenes. This boldly-worked sheet is a study for an etching depicting a May Day celebration in a village recently identified as Xeuilley, a small town in Lorraine where Callot's family owned property. A massive oak tree dominates the village green, providing shade for the dancing villagers and seating for the musicians. The subject gave Callot the opportunity to mix country folk with more elegantly dressed observers

Landscape with Two Pilgrims Walking Along a Road 16th century Attributed to Pieter Balten Netherlandish As the sun is setting behind the hills in this rural landscape, two pilgrims encounter a shepherd and his flock, sitting along a sandy road. Further in the background, cows are grazing the pasture, and a figure is fishing in a creek near some cottages. This harmonious pastoral scene was presumably created by the Netherlandish artist Peeter Baltens, active in Antwerp in the mid-sixteenth century. Baltens worked in close vicinity of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (ca. 1528-1569), who was his junior by a few years, and possibly assisted in his studio.1 Baltens’s works show strong similarity to both Bruegel and other contemporaries such as Hans Bol (1534-1593), which is why the attribution of several of their drawings - including this one - are topic of ongoing discussion. Indian Temple. Artist: George Chinnery (British, London 1774-1852 Macau). Dimensions: sheet: 4 15/16 x 6 9/16 in. (12.5 x 16.7 cm). Date: ca. 1808-12.In the early nineteenth century, the British East India Company's growing presence in India encouraged London-trained artists to travel to the subcontinent. Chinnery left England in 1802 to seek portrait commissions in Madras, Calcutta, and Dacca (present-day Dhaka, Bangladesh). This lively sketch of a small Indian temple, falling into ruin and buffeted by a passing squall, likely dates to his residence in Dacca between 1808 and 1812. In that period the artist stayed with the British East India representative Sir Charles D'Oyly; this work was once housed in an album assembled by a collector who knew both D'Oyly and Chinnery.
