War of 1812. United States Frigate 'President', captained by Stephen Decatur, is pursued by a British HMS Endymion, a 40-gun frigate, Jan. 15, 1815. President's artillery was hindered by a damaged hull. Eventually the Endymion caught up to Decatur, who managed to shoot into her rigging. When two other ships of the British squadron came into cannon range, Decatur surrendered the President. This very detailed painting depicts 22 sailors working to repair the sails  (BSLOC_2019_6_108)

The Spanish Naval cruiser the Baleares, a Canarias-class heavy cruiser saw service during the Spanish Civil War, when she was torpedoed and sunk by destroyers of the Spanish Republican Navy during the Battle of Cape Palos. Out of her crew of 1,206, she had 765 seamen killed or missing, among them Vice-Admiral Manuel Vierna Belando, commander of the cruiser division.

Bombardment of Canea by the Combined Powers.  In 1896 the Greeks and Turks quarrelled in the island of Crete; and the great powers of Europe stepped in to preserve peace. The insurgents in Canea refused to evacuate the town, so the warships bombarded it on February 21, 1897. It was rather farcical, all those big ships shooting at one little town; but they took care to injure it as little as possible, They only wished to convince the insurgents that they were united and in earnest. This engraving was copied from an illustration from Johan Nieuhof's 'Gedenkwaerdige Zee en Lantreize' (Contemporary Sea and Landscapes), which was published in 1682 in Amsterdam. It shows a fish market in Batavia, present-day Jakarta or Djarta in Indonesia. In the foreground are several flat-bottomed fishing vessels and baskets in the water. Several men have climbed ladders leading to the roof.
