The United States Double Turret Monitor Miantonomoh.  The Miantonomoh was one of the last monitors constructed for the U.S. Navy, and her history shadows the general history of the navy in the years leading up to the Spanish American War. The vessel took part in the blockade of Cuba, but saw little actual combat.

Fashoda Incident (1898), now Kodok (South Sudan). Conflict of interests between France and Great Britain. Both countries planned to build lines of communication so that their colonial possessions would be uninterruptedly linked. Both powers sent military expeditions to defend their interests, which coincided at Fashoda. The French expedition, outnumbered, were forced to retreat, allowing British control of the Sudan region. Arrival of the Anglo-Egyptian contingent at Fashoda, led by field marshal Kitchener, on 21 September 1898. The fleet consisted of five steamers, two of which were gunboats, three Sudanese battalions, one hundred Scottish troops and Maxim artillery system. Photoengraving by Laporta. The USS Cruiser Columbia was launched in July 1892 and in 1894 put under the command of Captain G.W. Summer. At the time, at 412 feet in length, it was the longest vessel in the US Navy. It was built as a commerce raider and saw little action in the Spanish American War (1898), spending time conveying troops to Puerto Rico in July and August of 1898. In World War I, it became the flagship of Squadron 2, Destroyer Force, Atlantic Fleet. A three-masted schooner with many guns, it also had four torpedo tubes. It was finally decommissioned in June 1921.

Mahdist War (1881-1899). It faced the followers of Sudanese religious leader Muhammad Ahmad bin Abdullah bin Fahal, the self-proclaimed Mahdi, against Egyptian Khedivate troops, who were later joined by British forces. Suakin, Sudan. City blockaded by Mahdi loyalists. At that time it was Sudan's main port on the Red Sea, which was threatened by the Sudanese warlord Osman Digna (1836-1926). Suakin housed the headquarters of the Anglo-Egyptian troops that were fighting against the Mahdi. On February 13, 1883, Egyptian troops under the command of General Hicks Pasha (1830-1883) landed at Suakin to fight the rebellion. Engraving by Rico.
