The title expressed on the medal, King of the French,” rather than King of France, signifies his election by his subjects in accordance with the new constitutional laws. As with Napoleon in the early years of the nineteenth century, Louis Philippe was adept at using the art of the medal to promote Royalist propaganda during his July Monarchy. Over twenty-eight effigies of him are known to exist, underscoring his interest in disseminating the power of his reign. The talented, prolific medalist Alexis Joseph Depaulis studied at the École nationale supériore des Beaux-Arts under Bertrand Andrieu in medal making and Pierre Cartellier in sculpture. Depaulis regularly exhibited works at the school’s salon between 1815 to 1855, and in 1834 he was named a chevalier de la legion d’honneur. The Concordiae DUBOIS. Famous for his collections, including the finest assemblage of arms and armor in Northern Europe, Augustus founded the Dresden Kunstkammer, predecessor to the present-day state collections. This is a model made of Solnhofen limestone, from which molds were taken for casting medals. Tobias Wolff, a rather elusive personality, probably worked in Breslau (present-day Wrocław, Poland) before moving to Saxony where he was employed by the elector. In 1576 he was called portrait carver from Breslau.” There are indications that he was also active in Augsburg in a later phase of his career.. By 1723, eight years after the kings death, the so-called medallic history of Louis XIV (Histoire métallique du Roy) comprised nine hundred medals including variants. On its front (obverse) each medal in the series bore a magnificent profile portrait of the king and on its back (reverse) a figurative image and inscription that commemorated an individual event for posterity. The gifted, prolific medallist, Jean Mauger, who worked at the Paris mint from 1685 until his death in 1722, was responsible for two hundred fifty medals in the series. From time to time Augustus passed along to Louis commissions including this medal to commemorate the bicentennial of Benjamin Franklins birth. The commission, brought about by an Act of Congress of April 27, 1904, was originally awarded to Augustus, but he insisted Louis sign the work as his own. In 1905, through the auspices of Metropolitan trustee Daniel Chester French, Saint-Gaudens received a plaster copy of Jean Antoine Houdons marble bust of Benjamin Franklin (1788; 72.6), which had been given to the Museum in 1872. This well-known portrait was the reference point for the bust-length profile on the medals obverse.
