Yet the distinctive imagery on its reverse has led some to suggest that it may instead commemorate the Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye of the same year. Louis XIV negotiated that treaty on behalf of his ally Sweden, using the threat of Frances military power to cow the Elector of Brandenburg into ceding back to Sweden the lands he had won in the Scanian War. Louis, in turn, paid the Elector 300,000 talents to settle Frances outstanding debt to him of three times that amount. The treaty, entirely to France and Swedens benefit, was devised with prudent cunning and effectively marshalled Frances military shield, sword of iron, and state cornucopia of gold to gain peace. This concept, pictured in allegorical form on the medals reverse, is reinforced by the deFrench 16th Century, François I, 1494 1547, King of France 1515 (obverse), early 16th century François I, 1494-1547, King of France 1515 obverseRoyal Medicine Academy, Louis XVIII Gayrard, Raymond. Location: PRIVATE COLLECTION. MADRID. SPAIN.Medal: Sultan Mehmed II model 1481 (old aftercast) Costanzo da Ferrara Italian Costanzo da Ferrara was both a painter and a medalist who was primarily active in Naples. Costanzo was called to Istanbul to paint a portrait of the Sultan Mehmed II of Turkey (1430-1481) probably between 1475-1478 when diplomatic relations were restored following the Turkish attack on Negroponte. It is likely that Costanzo remained at the court until the Sultan's death in 1481, when this medal was produced. The reverse shows the subject on horseack. The work is a fine old aftercast of the 1481 version of Costanzos original medal of 1477- 80; it was possibly cast after a reworked and polished lead original. Note the unusual spelling of ETERETIE, which should be ET GRETIE.. Two different artists are detectable: Mark and Luke stand out as the work of an exceptionally talented practitioner, including some breathtakingly lovely touches in the application of the flesh tones, rendered in a thin red wash on top of the translucent whites, the curls of the saints' hair, and details like the showering gold at the base of Luke's halo.
