These collections often included exotic birds such as parrots, admired for their rarity, as well as more familiar native species. In 1731 the Meissen manufactory began a new genre in European porcelain, producing several hundred life-size and near-life-size porcelain birds and animals, many destined for the Japanese Palace of Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony (1670-1733). To create them, factory modelers found inspiration in nature, looking both to living and stuffed specimens, as well as zoological illustrations and Asian porcelain precedents. The great Meissen modeler Johann Joachim Kändler is known to have copied from life the birds kept at the royal aviary at Schloss Moritzburg.Surviving Snuff Bottle China. Snuff Bottle 41350Hatch. The Massachusetts WPA Federal Art Project Photograph CollectionSchellenbaum early 19th century German The Turkish Crescent, still used in traditional Turkish ensembles, was an important instrument of European Janissary bands during the 18th century. Also adopted by large military bands, it gradually went out of style in the mid-1800s. The instrument is equipped with bells and jingles and was played by shaking it up and down and in a twisting motion to produce jingling sounds. The Muslim crescent and horsetail plumes are emblems of the battlefield. Technical description: The metal pole fits inside the wood handle. A spring handle makes the entire instrument move more, creating more jingling. The metal pole is surmounted with a brass crescent pointing up. Below the bras crescent is a small ball, and below that are four hooks equally spaced around the pole and each with a metal bell with an internal clapper. Below the hooks is another small ball, and then a very large cone shaped piece with three rows of concentric circles "punched out." Around the bFan Made 1701-1800 France. Although characterized as more provincial in style than porcelain, French faience was used at the court of Louis XIV as part of elaborate meals and displays, with large-scale vessels incorporated into the Baroque garden designs of Versailles. Earlier examples of French faience attest to the strong influence of maiolica artists from Italy. Later works demonstrate the ways in which cities such as Nevers, Rouen, Lyon, Moustiers, and Marseille developed innovative vessel shapes and decorative motifs prized among collectors throughout Europe. While faience can be created from a wide mixture of clays, it is foremost distinguished by the milky opaque white color achieved by the addiAyasofya's bell in the Weapons Museum / Abdullah FrèresVintage Photograph.
