US Navy Lighthouse Tender Amaranth, attached to the 11th lighthouse District covering Lakes Superior and Juron during World War One. This tender was transferred to the Navy Department by order of the President on April 11, 1917, and then transferred to the 9th Naval District. It is a single issed screw steamer with a steel hull, measuring 166' in length and with a 975 ton displacement. The vessel has 672 horsepower and a crew of 5 officers and 20 men.

Safeguards Against Shipwreck. Operating buoy tenders to keep the channels of coastwise traffic safely marked is one of the versatile United States Coast Guard's many aids to navigation. A new Coast Guard tender is shown somewhere along the Atlantic Coast, approaching one of the thousands of buoys that are serviced by the tenders' all-weather crews.

Preventing Sea Disasters Is the Coast Guard's Business. The new 545-ft. Grace Line passenger and cargo ship SS Santa Mercedes is seen here during her final outfitting stages of construction in dry-dock at the Bethlehem Steel Shipyard, Sparrows Pt., Baltimore Md. Her graceful beam is 79-ft. wide, bar depth 48 ft. 1-in. She has a displacement of 14,100 gross tons, and is powered by a steam driven single screw geared turbines. Coast Guard marine inspectors in the Baltimore area have kept careful watch over the building of the beautiful modern ship from the blueprint stage, through the laying of her keel in the cradle, and throughout her entire construction phases to see that safety for passengers and crew has been included in her design in keeping with the high U.S. standards for merchant vessels. The Coast Guard will continue to inspect and re-inspect her periodically throughout her operating life.

Special Delivery from Ship to Ship. Across a line from a Coast Guard combat cutter to a Navy freighter, medical supplies are delivered somewhere in the mid-Atlantic. The line is fired from deck to deck with a Lyle gun. This method of delivery is a time saver, when ships meet at sea. It eliminates the launching of a small boat and is especially effective when high seas make small-boat handling perilous.

Here can be seen a surfboat being unloaded at the floating dock. The pieces of steel were carried off by native gangs, one eighty pound piece being carried by each native.
