London in the Fifth Year of War- Everyday Life in London, England, UK, 1944 A busy scene in London's Leicester Square. An American soldier escorts two women past men resting on benches and a group of people chatting in the centre of the Square. The trio are heading towards the Odeon Cinema, which is currently showing 'The Phantom of the Opera', starring Nelson Eddy, Susanna Foster and Claude Rains. Also visible in the background are a newsagent's shop selling 'Picture Post' and an advertisement for a National Symphony Orchestra Concert at the Royal Albert Hall.

Fifth Avenue Interlude -- Fifth Avenue, the street of fashion and swank in this city, was a street with music today as Otto Feinberg, a longshoreman, paused to listen to this radio as he sat on the terrace wall in front of the New York Public Library on the corner of 42nd Street. Otto, while waiting for the time of his night assignment to roll around, sat in the sun, amusing himself and passers-by.No one thinks it strange that wharfie Otto Feinberg sits on a wall in Fifth Ave., street of swank and fashion to listen to his radio. San Francisco's Chinatown was the port of entry for early Hoisanese and Zhongshanese Chinese immigrants from the Guangdong province of southern China from the 1850s to the 1900s. The area was the one geographical region deeded by the city government and private property owners which allowed Chinese persons to inherit and inhabit dwellings within the city. The majority of these Chinese shopkeepers, restaurant owners, and hired workers in San Francisco Chinatown were predominantly Hoisanese and male. Many Chinese found jobs working for large companies seeking a source of labor, most famously as part of the Central Pacific on the Transcontinental Railroad. Other early immigrants worked as mine workers or independent prospectors hoping to strike it rich during the 1849 Gold Rush.
